Too bad football doesn't carry the clout is used to.

Yeah....WF Band isn't what it was when I graduated HS in '98. In 97 it started to go downhill. Now they don't even get past Area in Marching Band or Region in Honor Band.
Whit flight has definately happend in that area of Spring.
I'm pretty sure I've told this story before, but...My child spent 3 years in a KISD Exemplary elementary before we made the switch to private. In those 3 years (K-2) she had one FABULOUS teacher, one OK but very slow teacher, and one HORRIBLE teacher. The one teacher that was so bad, was verbally abusive to an excessive point.
Granted, every school seems to have "one of those", but the things this teacher said and did to my child were traumatic and have had a continued effect even after 3 years away from that school. We had several meetings with the VP and Principal at the school, but nothing was done. We insisted our child be removed from the class, and they agreed it was necessary, but didn't do so until 2 weeks before the end of the school year! In fact, the only reason they actually made the move to a different class is because we contacted the Superintendent, Dr. Jim Cain. Only after a discussion with him did the school principal react to the situation. The problem was equally with the teacher and the administration's lack of response.
Upon further research, I found out this teacher had been at the school for 15+ years. She previously had been teaching a higher grade level, but had been moved to a much lower level. Why? Well, the parents from her class had recommended her termination or the removal of their students from her class. They had even gone as far as to pass around a petition through all of the parents discussing her short-comings as a 4th grade teacher. Apparently it created such a stir, the principal had no choice to move her to a different grade level, which is how we ended up with her. (Yes, I know it wasn't a true demotion to move to a lower grade, but she was moved mostly due to a lack of subject knowledge.)
I have always considered KISD to be an exceptional public school system. However, our experience there was AWFUL. Sure, there are thousands of students that received a thorough, incident free education there (which I know many), but what we went through can never be erased in my opinion.
We looked at quite a few private schools in the area before selecting Trinity, and I saw one especially that seemed like a magnet school for "problem children." However, many schools are not set up this way and don't tolerate any misstep by the students. For instance, if you choose to allow it, they can still get old fashioned swats at some. (Which is an entirely different subject.) The teachers and administration truly care about the education and all-around well being of each and every student. They honestly try to encourage the whole child, not just TAKS scores.
We chose Trinity because I attended that school for several years before transitioning to SISD. I went to Bammel Middle and Westfield High... back when it was considered to be BETTER than Klein, and I can say I was easily far, far ahead of my peers in terms of academics when I made the switch. I graduated with honors in the top 15% of my class. Much of this I credit to the quality of education I received in my years Pre-K-6 in private school. As far as fine arts go, (I'll get killed by the Klein parents for this) I was lucky to be in the band program at Westfield, which was as good as it gets anywhere in this country.
As far as extra-curricular activities, my child's school offers most you can receive at a public middle school. Grades 5-8 can participate in sports such as soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and football. They offer art classes and computer club for all ages, and drama classes for the older children. Grades 3-8 can participate in the choirs at the school, and 5-8 can enter the band program. In fact, our 3-4 grade choir just started this year and entered a city wide choir contest in April. They competed against 37 other schools, including KISD elementary schools, and our choir won FIRST PLACE! So there are lots of opportunities for activities in the private schools, depending on which you attend. Frankly, I think these are valuable choices for students, but I don't plan on my kid becoming a professional athlete, so I find quality academics to be infinitely more important.
Ultimately, do the research and make the choice that is best for you and your child.

Please look at the post you are going to reference and make sure it isn't half a year old!! Tis has happened twice in this thread!
-
Considering that post was written in June (8 months ago!!),
Katy is just suburban sprawl on a flat prairie. Just not my thing I guess.
-
Didn't Anna Nicole's husband own that property??
-
There is a museum in TW Mall.
-
Are you trying to say they are copying Katy? I wouldn't live in Katy if my life depended on it.
-
blacks will never predominate around conroe or TW. I know for a fact conroe has a bad rep for that kind of thing. There are very successful ones but they will never predominate.
-
Isn't there already a Randalls over there???
-
We don't currently live in The Woodlands (right next to) but we are in the same Boy Scout district. My son is a Cub Scouts and they are primarily done by school to keep the boys together. I know Awana is done by churches. We do meet a church though. They don't have anything to do with the running of the Boy Scouts.
-
Yeah I'm sure there are. There are probably some parents who are so busy they don't have time for their kids. I was just saying that the reasons the schools are rated so good isn't because of people not getting involved with their kid's education.
-
I am going to be a teacher. I can tell you that the majority of the reasons these schools are good is because of parental support. No teacher can do their job if the parents don't do their part. I don't know where you live but from what I've seen and heard from friends who are teachers in TW, your "stop and drop" remark is way off based with the schools here.

Thanks so much, you guys..The big issue will be the schools in the Woodlands. Anyone out there who can give their opinion is welcome to respond. I am concerned about intermediate schools all the way through high school. We are zoned to HISD right now in Houston. Which schools have the best advanced classes for the Woodlands? We are probably choosing the schools first and then the neighborhood. I have to tell you, I was a little freaked by the news about the Woodlands High School kids being caught with Molotov(spelling?) cocktails near another school. Would you choose the new College Park High School, or the old one? I am a native Houstonian, but we were hearing so many mixed things about the middle and high schools in Houston, we decided maybe it would be best to get out of HISD. Basically, we haven't found a neighborhood in The Woodlands we wouldn't be happy with. We love the Grogans and Panther Creek areas, because they are older. But we were surprised that those are the ones zoned to the new College Park High School. Cochrans Crossing and Indian Springs we like a lot, too, and those are the old Woodlands High School, right? Also, do the kids in the Scout programs in the Woodlands go to the Boy and Girl Scouts affiliated with their schools, or with their churches? Thanks again..

Here are the ratings from TEA on CISD Elems:
Wow that must be some kind of record. Every elementary in TW but one is exemplary. I wonder if any other areas around here can say the same.

Mayde Creek is close enough.

when we move in 3 yrs we are going to move to either CC or AB. We love the brick style that is around CC but we hear that AB is a great area for kids.

From CFISD website:
<<A teacher with a masters degree will receive a $1,000 supplement to the base schedule at the appropriate experience level.
A teacher with a doctorate will receive a $2,000 supplement to the base schedule at the appropriate experience level.>>
So...time in grade affects your pay more than a degree. If you stopped teaching for two years (or just went on to get your Masters) you would be forgoing around 40K a year plus the cost of school. So you would be at least 85K-90K behind just to gain 2K a year.
And it's Doctorate...unless you are studying Theology.....

Is the Bridgelands just on flat, treeless prairie? If it is, and the developers end up making it look like Sugar Land or Katy, then it won't be too bad. That is one good thing about these developments. Developers turn the flat prairie land into flat land full of trees.
Post 1000
Yeah when I visit friends in Cypress I can always tell how old the nighborhood is by the heigth of the 2 or 3 trees transplanted into the front yard.
And there are natural trees in Sugarland. My aunt lives in Greatwood and they have a ton of trees. My grandparents live down the road in Richmond and they have a good 20 trees on their lot.

I'm glad. When I was in school we only had 2 days off for Tgiving. I had to pay $75 for 3 days of daycare this Tgiving break! We are in Tomball ISD and voted on the calendar.

mrfootball....what exactly is your problem with The Woodlands?
You always seem so antagonistic towards the community.

They don't have it on there but Blinn is the exhibition band after finals. We'll be playing right before they announce the results.

hmm...i dunno. He has other posts that would suggest otherwise.

Don't worry genghis.....if you ever happen to say anything positive at all about The Woodlands you are branded as being a crazy person.
It's the same analogy that people use to brand christians as being right winged bible thumpers.
It does take a good 35-40 min to travel from downtown to TW Mall though. This is with midday traffic. I would guess it would take 30-35 to make it to 1960/Kuyk.

That's interesting. My husband's side of the family is related to him. He was my FIL's uncle.
