  1. You may want to check the East End forum if you haven't done so and ask the regulars there. Eastwood (http://www.eastwood-houston.com/) may fit your criteria and budget the best, but there might be other neighborhoods. If you are able to spend a bit more and find a place in Idylwood or Houston Country club you will not regret it -- homes there are appreciating like crazy.

There is also this thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=13022.

  2. Within 5 minutes of each other along Lawndale...

Lawndale Tapioca (Chinese on the go) - Vietnamese sandwiches, bun, pho etc. (corner of Lawndale & 75th, on the shopping center N of CVS, between the new 99 cent store and the bank)

La Victoria - Mexican bakery and kitchen (past Lawndale and 75th going E, to the right after a bit)

Dinner Bell - American diner and bakery, mainly for the bakery but the diner is OK (corner of Lawndale & S Wayside, N of Villa Del Matel), bakery opens early

Cafe Flores - good coffee, tea, dessert and sandwiches plus nice ambiance and live acoustic on weekends (corner of Lawndale & S Wayside, E of Villa Del Matel), think Starbucks but better and locally owned.

  3. I know this is old news but... to my disappointment Houston PBS is showing the same programming on its HD channel (Comcast 308 formerly 100% HD) as KUHT 8 -- mostly regular resolution with a sprinkling of HD. According to their website, they will be adding HD shows to the feed. One of the things I liked is that they would repeat the same show several times a week, so I could always catch a show later on if I missed it. I doubt this will be the case in the future. Anyway, surely there was a good reason for the change.

As a previous Dish TV subscriber (before moving to Houston and prior to HD coming into the scene), I recall they a national PBS channel in addition to the local PBS channel. I wonder if anyone who has Dish TV or Direct TV can tell me if they receive a national HD feed separate from the local feed. Thanks.

  4. Queen of Peace just celebrated its 65th anniversary on April. It's a small, simple church with nice stained grass, especially the one over the choir.

Don't know much about its early history, but the church today is in great shape and shows no signs of disrepair. A new AC unit was installed last year and the interiors received a fresh coat of paint this spring. The parish was taken over by an outstanding young pastor belonging to the Companions of the Cross (they also run the Catholic Charismatic Center in Cullen) nearly 7 years ago. Evidently he was all by himself at first, taught himself Spanish and had to tackle a lot of challenges. By all accounts the turnaround has been remarkable -- the school itself has nearly quadrupled in attendance -- and some masses are now standing-room only. The two other parish priests are excellent as well and very down-to-earth.
