  1. Well Well Well.... I guess we wont see a Super Center Wal*Mart for some time to come, maybe ever, interesting meeting last night now my first impression was this group of concerned citizens was some what different than last time at the ( P&Z) meeting you didnt have the (we dont want thoses people here) comments at this meeting, now first is it me or is the college station citizens and council members to some degree using traffic issues to cover up the plan and simple fact that they just dont want a Wal*Mart, no matter how fancy its looks with the nice trees and different color on the building then the usually blue and gray color and even the A&M star on the ground where the seating area was purposed in the front, no matter how nice it looks its just not good enough for College Station maybe Bryan but not here, i agreed with Gay towards the end of the meeting, how will this look when business want to relocate to College Station if College Station don't keep there word and (unless your development meet our standards and intergrity than your not welcome to come) that's basically why Wal*mart isn't getting build no matter what they said about traffic, also its going to be interesting to watch what is good enough to be built at that corner of 6/ Rock Prairie because development will occur there also 1 more thing as from what i heard will Wal*Mart/ Weingarten take it's proposal north of C.S. all around im sure the majority of the people got what they wanted... well not Weingarten of course

  2. I was watching T.V the other day and i stopped on channel 19 C.S. city view it was the (Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting) from July 6 about the Super Wal*Mart on Rock Prairie/ Hwy 6, I strongly recommend

you catch the next one they been playing it all day, but if you cant watch the whole broadcast because its so long i suggest you try and watch it when the floor is open to the public, After watching it maybe 3 times i came to the conclusion of 3 things....... 1. People in that area of woodcreek/ foxfire and surrounding community arn't against development at that spot they just dont want a (Sprawl*Mart) and this has to do with how Wal*Mart wouldn't fit the image of this area as 1 lady stated ( we live in FoxFire we dont need a wal*mart) ....... 2. People are concered about how horrible the traffic will be if this proceed and if you been to the area you can understand how they feel about traffic problems already especially after 5.pm now imagine what a 3,500 parking lot would do ...... 3.(and this one kinda confused me) people were concerned about crime, again as 1 person stated (we don't want and i quote (those people) driving up and down our streets), now i know what he meant and i'm sure you can understand what he was trying say, i just dont understand do they think people who shop at wal*mart will see there nice houses and cars and will rob them, the lady on the Commission board said she wants to see a study of crime that wal*mart causes to the surrounding area within distance and she soon followed up again i quote (NOT BRYAN they have a different cliential) me being from Bryan kinda took offence to that but they took shoots at Bryan all night, So in conclusion they want development there just not wal*mart

  3. Does anyone know when the start of the Downtown Phase II on Bryan street is supposed to begin? I was under the impression that this was to have already started by now. Perhaps the city has ran into funding issues? Just seems like they are taking their time on this one

Sorry for getting off topic, but to your question the news did a story this week and Phase II starts next month and it will be intersting to see how they transform Bryan Ave. into a similar looking Main Street. giving that Bryan Ave. is an alley that the city officals said was built a long time ago for the purpose to bring people into the back of Main Street. business it will be something to see unfold also i am looking forward to see how downtown rejuvenates business from East 24th on north to MLk in the later Phases, right now it kinda look like 2 different downtowns once you cross East 24th on North but once everything is complete it will do wonders for Bryan

  4. OK let me stop you, if you didnt grow up in the so called (slums) dont' say a thing about it cause you dont know anything about thearea, FIRST STOP STOP STOP comparing Bryan to College Station so what College Station has (alot) of new little strip malls and places for college students to live, it is a college town and reaching out to the students.... SECOND why do people always love talking about Bryan so what if it has illegals mexicans wake up so does the rest of Texas and the south west in general also the so called (slums) you and the rest of Bryan bashers keep talking about houses people who dont have money to buy houses in Tiffany Park, Carter Creek, Traditions they didn't build the houses the city did, you people dont no nothing about Bryan you just see places like East and West Mlk and you judge THIRD if you dont have anything positive to say shut up and let Bryan be Bryan and College Station be College Station

  5. I did some driving around last week and was horrified to find a street I lived on during college(Verde Dr.) had become a virtual slum. There are vacant buildings with spray paint on them and a still nice apartment complex seems to be figting for its life and now has a gated entry. When I lived in the area the streets around Pepper Tree were already in decline. Earlier this year a murder occured there. Ironically, Beck and MLK still unfairly are often thought of as "slum". The improvements to both since the 1980's, as mentioned before on this site, are simply amazing. It is streets such as Verde that have actually declined.

Bryan needs to wake up and focus redevelopment on areas that should be middle class to high-end student housing. I do not have a vendetta against the poor or working class(that would be self-loathing behavior), I just feel areas so close to Texas A&M should be student housing, not HUD subsidized slum. The Presidio apartments are awesome, but if the nearby streets contain criminal elements will the developers decide to simply cut their losses and not futher invest in the area? I would love to see incentives and tax abatements given to developments like the Presidio and Reveille Ranch(formerly Campus Lodge) in return for purchases and redevelopment of nearby blights in the areas around the complexes. All of the housing wouldn't have to be for the rich kids, but a good portion should be. All of Bryan would greatly benefit from the spending these kids with parents' credit cards do. I'd love to see Bryan's share of A&M college students on the level of about 35%. We can keep quiet neighborhoods quiet while still reaping the benefits of retail spending these students would provide.

Say, You just read my mind completly, i noticed pepper tree about 2 months ago when i heard a friend of mine got cut by someone, so when i went over there i was not expecting to see what i saw, the second time i went there it was a group fight in the middle of the street so i went down Verde and i agree with what you said it was empty apartments and kinda a depressing area, also i grew up on beck when i was 6 in 1992 i moved to Bittle Ln/ Jordan Loop which in the early 90's was like the second Beck but its way different there now Beck has a new look and a new feel but what can you do about places like Pepper Tree, Verde, West MLK ,East MLK, Emerald Park, Bryan is a city that has 70,000 people and has is a more diversity city than its city to the south but actually in some places college students actually make the area feel cool like on Villa Maria west on the other side on 2818 streets like Sandalwood Ln, Cobblestone Ln, Jaguar Dr also another 1 is the Villa West on Fin Feather those streets like Navidad St, Rio Grande, Leon, Frio Circle its kinda similar a ghetto mixed area with college students but the students there seem to make it work make the area standout but in a good way, and 1 more thing Bryan has to improve the apartments closer to A&M i went down Natalie and Boyett Strett over towards the back of North Gate and that whole area kind looks like Pepper Tree in a way you cant have that so close to A&M ................................................................................

    ................................................................................

    .

................................. The whole area from Villa Maria West to 2818 has change a whole lot Bryan in the past 5 years has change the look and even though a couple of shopping stores maybe a resturant or two would have been a step up i feel that the Science Center brings more than money to that area also 1 last thing Bryan has to fugure out quickly how there going to bring life into Texas Ave where H.E.B. and Krogers were and now soon to be gone Albertsons because that area kinda reminds me of the Manor east Mall when it just sat there all those years i hate driving down that street and seeing all thoses empty buildings

  6. Bryan Municipal Golf Course on list for A&M facility

    By APRIL AVISON

    Eagle Staff Writer

Bryan's municipal golf course is among three locations the Texas A&M Health Science Center is eyeing for a new expanded campus, and center president Nancy Dickey has said one advantage of the site is that it would be a "gift" from the city.

That's news to Bryan Mayor Ernie Wentrcek, who says the city has never discussed with the Health Science Center the possibility of Bryan giving away - or selling - the golf course.

Although a decision on a new site appears to be down the road, a move to locate on the 80-year-old city golf course could spark controversy.

In a brief presentation to the A&M System's regents last month, Dickey said the Health Science Center is considering three locations for its new campus: the golf course on Villa Maria Road, acreage at George Bush West and F.M. 2818 and the Westinghouse Property on the east side of Earl Rudder Freeway South.

"We have not submitted any type of formal proposal to the board of regents, so if and when such a proposal does come before the board, it will be part of their public agenda," said Alicia Dorsey, the center's vice president for communication and program development. "No decisions have been made about sites. There are no pending official actions on the board of regents."

The regents are scheduled to meet again July 27 and 28. An agenda for the meeting has not yet been posted.

However, it's clear from Dickey's May 25 presentation that the center staff has put some time into evaluating its top three sites. While public details about the plans are sparse, the 12-page presentation suggests the objective is to consolidate the center's scattered local operations to maximize visibility, establish a separate entity from the university and foster a scientific community."Dr. Dickey spoke to the board of regents regarding our desire to consolidate if necessary resources were available," Dorsey said. "That's as far as it gone."...........................................................................

..........................................When i first heard about this i felt Bryan had a second chance at getting this land right, back in Febuary when they decided to fix up the golf course they made a big mistake but now if they go on and build the science center instead of fixing the golf course that will look great with the Presido apartments in that area and the new overpass and Hampton apartment also Bryan will bring more college students to town and we all know how important the students are to Bryan-College Station the City Coucil has to accept the offer, it is an excellent chance to finally improve the look of villa maria/south college but this is the Bryan City Council and they have dropped the ball in the pass so it will interesting to watch how this unfold

  7. I heard about this, Wal-Mart was picking also a location on Rock.P in College Station and decided the 2818 Leonard Rd. spot was better. i wonder what they was thinking i grew up in this part of town Beck, Bittle Ln. Jordan Loop and that part of College Station im sure has more income than this side but if thats true its great to see that part of Bryan getting improvements long over-due

  8. I drove by today city i wasn't looking for it but it just (poped) out at me, ok it's right on East MLK you know where that car wash is well the store across the stree from Tabacco Barn it was a little BBQ joint there its like a little outhouse size building, man they painted the building like pink/orange and have a very small looking sign thats say's (Wing Heaven) over the doorway, i was very very very very very disappointed trust me you dont want to see it, now will people eat there in this area? No doubt, but i was looking forward to a nice place. Thats what i mean when you live this far away from Texas A&M/university Drive thats what we typically get around here

  9. YEAH ITS CALLED (BOWIE) I THINK THAT THE POLICE USE IT NOW CAUSE ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO I WAS ON MY WAY HOME AND I SEEN LIKE 9 POLICE OFFICERS AND A STAKEOUT VAN AND THEY WERE IN THE DOORWAY SO WHEN I PASTED BY THE NEXT DAY I SAW A GREEN PAPER/TAG ON THE DOOR MY COUSIN LIVE ON MARTIN LUTHER KING STREET/EAST MLK IN BRYAN AND THEY PUT GREEN PAPERS ON THE HOUSES OVER THERE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH DRUGS HOUSES AND THE PAPER NOTIFY THE PUBLIC OF THE CIRCUMSTANCE BUT IT WOULD BE COOL TO SEE THEM DO SOMETHING WITH THAT LAND I JUST HEARD THAT THERE OPENING A WING HEAVEN ON MARTIN LUTHER KING STREET IN BRYAN ITS ABOUT TIME THEY BUILD SOMETHING OVER HERE TRUST ME IF THEY BUILD NICE THINGS WE WILL SPEND MONEY JUST BECAUSE EAST MLK/WEST AND THE SURROUNDING AREA'S NOT AUSTIN COLNEY, CARTER CREEK, TIFFANY PARK, OR COOPERFIELD WE WOULD LIKE NICE THINGS BUILT HERE ALSO ANYWAY ITS COOL TO SEE BRYAN GROW AND EXPAND MAYBE SOON WE CAN GET SOME UP-SCALES PROJECTS BUILT OTHER THAN GROCERY STORES BUT I'LL TAKE WHAT WE GET

  10. IM confused, i was driving along University East heading towards Bryan, and as soon as I reached coopperfield i seen the New First American Bank and i was wondering was this project in bryan or college station, it wasn't a sign saying leaving college station or welcoming you to bryan so i was wondering where exactly was this located???
