  1. Great thread, love the photo! We moved into Meyerland in 1960, my mom still lives in the same house. I wonder if the photo might have actually been taken in 1959. The land where Kolter Elementary now stands is vacant in the photo. Kolter opened in 1960, so I think it might have been present in a photo taken in 1960, unless the construction went really quickly - I don't remember myself, I was just too young at the time. I attended Kolter from 1962-1969. The school had its 50th Anniversary celebration in November 2010. Amazing how much I still remember of the neighborhood even after 32 years in the Navy and being gone almost 40 years now. I keep promising myself I'm going to move back someday. Great place to grow up!

  2. My in-laws have lived in a two-story greyish place in Maplewood ever since it was built in the 1960s. When they were living and working in the UK for a while in the mid-80's, they lived in a place called Tanglewood Cottage, and we thought naming their Houston house would be a great idea. Being Houston and all, we named it "Roachcroft," for the huge critters we used to find in the kitchen when we'd turn on the light in the middle of the night and for Hillcroft which is about a block to the north.

The roaches are mostly gone now, but the name stuck. We're still traveling around (32 years in the military, I'm thinking of staying and making it a career), but whenever we come home, it's always to "Roachcroft." My own parents, who live a scant 2 miles away in Meyerland (since 1959) were horrified, but so what. Our home in Spain from 97-2000 proudly bore a sign beneath the normal name/rank sign on the front door proclaiming it "Roachcroft de Andalucia," much to the amusement of our Spanish Navy neighbors and to the consternation of the Americans.

  3. Past Shopping Places in Houston That Are No Longer Here.

    Name places you can remember.

Playhouse Toys in Meyerland Plaza, Sharpstown and on Post Oak across from Sakowitz? There were more, but I don't remember them all.

    Cargo Houston in Westbury Square?

    Madding's Drugs in Meyerland?

Kresge's (a dime store in Sharpstown Center)

Food Giant (Sharpstown and at Post Oak and Bellfort, later Belden's and most recently occupied by Kroger)
