  1. sakowitz furs is still around. Its in a small shop on post oak and westheimer. To bring it back would be a feat beacause of the galleria. Macys, and Neimans killed it. You'd also have to compete with the Houston dress shop: Tootsies, an institution. The money to bring it back would be astronomical! You'd probably have better luck in the woodlands and then opening a sattelite store up in River Oaks after the woodlands took off. Maybe even Frisco and Plano... (they're some of the fastest growing communities in the country right now)...

  2. Not sure I can handle a super-tall highrise being named after an architect! Not to say I dont think Calatrava's designs are interesting but he certainly doesnt deserve to have a building of that size named after him -- not to mention the whole twisting thing gets me.

The Tribune Building in Chicago (along with others that dont aspire to be so lofty) are the true architectural gems of Chicago -- not the ugly and oversized Sears and Hancock Towers, and AON... couldnt be much worse.

Santiago Calatrava's designs are not ment to be terribly pleasing to the eye. I'll agree with you there, however have you ever looked at his work from a different view: the statics of it is remarkable. Look up the meadows museum on SMU's campus. He has a sclupture there that is an engineering masterpeice. It's awesome. I don't like his designs but, he is a brilliant engineer and defies many conventions.

The sky scraper I hate most is the new one in Austin. It looks like something out of Gotham (batman). Its garrish! Ruins the skyline.

  3. Virgin does not have to be competative in their pricing, they're virgin.

Furthermore, the reason everyone is up in arms about this project getting underway (I personally agree that it was supposed to start yesterday) is because we have the most underdeveloped city in the united states right now.

Dallas is ahead of us by miles. They have a light rail that goes from north to south, and descent freeways. No, they don't have as many people living there, especially after Katrina but, I agree. I think that it is time that the city pulled its image up by adding more for tourists, and better public transportation. Gas is not cheap.

I'm all for planning and hashing things out however, I think that you're never really going to know if something will work or not until you begin to actually see it happen. While we are not a city that takes kindly to change, we are also a city that likes progress and ejoys something new. It enables the city to grow.
