  1. $3 filet mignon! Even 25 years ago that sounded questionable. FWIW, there was a "gentlemen's club" on the Gulf Freeway just outside the beltway that started off as a Rick's, same ownership as the one in the Galleria area, then had a different name after Rick's tanked. Then the building set vacant for several years but has recently re-opened as a party and reception venue. I couldn't tell you what it looks like inside - I imagine any stage with a pole in the middle has been removed - but the facility does seem to have generous parking behind the building which sits close to the access road.

It was called Sugar's for a while, then also called Vixxen's.  It closed because it was within 1500 feet of Grace Community Church, which, I believe, is a law in Harris, or is it Texas?  Either way.. that was a big deal at the time.

  2. Doesn't the Thanksgiving Day Parade go through downtown?  Downtown is no stranger to parades.  I'm not sure why people think downtown is not a good place for a parade in general.

Now as to the fact that it is the Pride Parade in specific, I think moving it away from Montrose is a sad decision.  This is where it has always been.

  3. I digress but the situation is similar at Chilosos. The order taking and payment system are a mess however the food is great and the prices good. I save Chilosos for the weekend when I'm not in a hurry.

I enjoy Chilosos, but they really stick it to you on mexican Coke prices.  I think they charge $3 for one of those glass bottles.  You can get the same coke for $1.75 at a bodega off N. Main a few blocks away, lol.

  4. Is it too much to ask not to wait 45 minutes to get an order of fried chicken?

Chicken can take a little bit longer to cook properly (re: no blood).  Combine this with a busy lunch rush and the fact that they are probably cooking food to order and not making it all beforehand and keeping it under heat lamps a la Popeye's, AND the store is understaffed at lunch?? It kind of makes sense.  Still, I sympathize with your plight and probably would have just gone elsewhere.  Making any kind of comment like that probably added an extra five minutes to your wait time, lol.

  5. Good news there... the vast majority of people living Downtown are rich, even taking into account the people that live in Downtown shelters.

Yeah, I think Whole Foods is a good fit. They've shown they can make smaller footprint stores work.

Agreed, I mentioned this earlier.  If you can afford to live downtown, you can afford to shop solely at Whole Foods.  Also, Whole Foods has a pretty nice hot food / soup / deli selection so it will definitely attract the work crowds for lunch.

As an employee who works in the Chase tower, I am now dreaming of a world in which a downtown Whole Foods opens up in the ground floor retail of the building going up at 700 Preston, next to the Market Square Garage.

  6. Cats would be cool if I weren't deathly allergic.

I haven't tried cat allergy medicine, but I'm wary of it's effectiveness.  If a cat so much as lightly grazes my skin with a claw, I turn into the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man.

  7. On this day, I'm in the Chase tower downtown and I'm thinking about all the hype that I hear in the media about how there could be possible attacks on the anniversary of 9/11.

I also remember where I was when it happened, I was working in the Southwestern Bell building at 3303 Weslayan and I was supporting telephone line techs in Connecticut.  They could see across the water, the buildings being hit.  That day was crazy, everyone in Houston was hearing about a possible bomb here, an abandoned truck on the highway on 610 that could have explosives in it, etc.  The worried public is so easily frightened.

  8. I just moved into the Beverly Hills neighborhood into my girlfriend's house.  She says that the neighborhood kids would go swimming in what they called "The Pits", which is what you guys are calling sandpits.  Easily accessible by going down to the corner of Fonville @ Alta Loma, and then just passing through the road's dead end there and into the grassy area behind the houses.  Crazy to read about the dead bodies found there!  Can't wait to share these links with her and her mom.
