  1. Target has two level stores in places like Minneapolis, Chicago and Denver.

Whole Foods has several cart escalator stores but it's usually to get to a parking garage.

H-E-B just opened a two level store in San Antonio. (Uses inclined magnetized conveyor)

There's a 3 story Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, I'd say where it is but I've caused enough trouble for one thread.  ;)

  2. Dallas Morning News: Dallas/Fort Worth Airport executive didn’t know whom he was briefing (but he apparently did OK)

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport CEO Sean Donohue had an unusual meeting about three months ago.

Speaking Tuesday afternoon to the New Cities Summit in Dallas, Donohue recalled that he was asked to brief a dozen people coming to the airport. But, he was told, he couldn’t know who the people were.

Under those conditions, he told them about his sprawling airport with its seven runways and five terminals.

In late April, he found out who the visitors were – Toyota representatives who were considering relocating the Japanese carmaker’s U.S. headquarters. Toyota announced April 29 that it would move its offices and 4,000 jobs to Plano.

Irving, Texas-based Exxon currently is building its 385-acre campus south of the Woodlands in Springwoods Village. The campus will consist of about 20 office and specialty buildings, and at least 10,000 employees are expected to be working at the site by 2015.

Just down the street at 78 Rainey Street, the Preview Leasing Center for SkyHouse® has now opened, as apartment leasing gets underway in anticipation of late November move-ins.

Simpson Southern Region Senior Vice President, Ginney Harvey, expressed her enthusiasm for welcoming prospective residents, saying, “Our Preview Center will allow future residents to explore our floor plans and experience for themselves the authenticity and vibrant community that will be an integral part of life at SkyHouse®.”

Any thoughts, is this aggressive or know of any other for lease properties with off-site preview centers?

  6. The people advocating taking out i-345 view it as a unnecessary short cut, particularly for people not from Dallas. First if the car is just passing through they can use 35, 635, loop 12 or 190. I can't find the source but taking 645 to get to 45 is an extra 6 or 7 minutes. Removing the freeway could encourage much needed DART ridership. I think a major compromise that might be necessary is to add more capacity for the one lane on ramp loop from Woodall Rodgers West Bound on to i-35 S and to do that same for the on ramp from i-35 N on to Woodall Rodgers East Bound,

If these are commuters from outside of Dallas who work within the CBD and Dallas wants to foster density then it's time to stop easily accommodate the growth of the suburbs at the expense of Dallas proper. The metroplex's employment hubs (high rise) are pretty spread out (Fort Worth, Las Colinas, Dallas Tollway, Richardson) so it's not as if a third of the metro works within a 5 mile radius of downtown. While we still need Arlington, Grand Prairie, Collin Country to join DART and the Cotton Belt Rail Line but for the most part the rail infrastructure is there, it's just time to start using it.

  7. as noted by Metro this was expected

Qatar Airways will launch a daily service to Dallas/Fort Worth in July, its seventh US destination.

From July 1, flight QR733 will depart Doha at 0810 and arrive at Dallas/Fort Worth at 1615. Return service QR734 will take-off from Dallas/Fort Worth at 1935 and land in Doha at 1820 the following day.

Qatar will deploy a Boeing 777-200LR on the route. The aircraft features a two-class design with 42 business class lie-flat seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, while the 217 seats in economy are in a 3-3-3 layout.

Dallas/Fort Worth will be the Gulf carrier's second Texas destination — it already flies to Houston, as well as to New York, Washington DC and Chicago.

Qatar is also launching routes to Philadephia from April 2 and to Miami from June 10

  8. United Airlines Announces New Nonstop Flights to Atlantic City, N.J., from Chicago and Houston

    http://newsroom.unitedcontinentalholdings.com/index.php?s=20295&item=124379

United Airlines today announced the airline will inaugurate service at Atlantic City International Airport, offering customers daily nonstop flights to United's hubs at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and United Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Smisek announced the service, which begins April 1, 2014, at a news conference at Newark Liberty International Airport, where United operates the region's largest airline hub.

Chicago and Houston are United's largest hub airports. The airline's new flights will enable one-stop service between Atlantic City and points throughout the Midwest and western United States, Canada, Asia and Latin America.

From Chicago, United's flight to Atlantic City will depart at 8:10 a.m. daily, arriving at 11:17 a.m. The return flight will depart Atlantic City at 11:52 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 1:10 p.m.

From Houston, United's flight to Atlantic City will depart at 7 p.m. daily, arriving at 11:20 p.m. The return flight will depart Atlantic City at 6 a.m. and arrive in Houston at 8:49 a.m.

United Express carrier ExpressJet will operate the Atlantic City flights with 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft.

  9. http://www.forbes.com/sites/maggiemcgrath/2013/10/16/american-airlines-adding-shanghai-nights-with-expanded-asia-presence/

In response to customer demand, American Airlines announced on Wednesday that it will add more routes to Asia in 2014. The airline said it will launch its first-ever nonstop service from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) next year, likely in the summer (pending regulatory approval).

The new daily service between DFW and Hong Kong will be operated with a Boing 777-300ER, American’s self-proclaimed “flagship” aircraft. This will be the first time American deploys this particular aircraft to Asia; the DFW-Shanghai will use the 777-200 aircraft. Both routes will be operated as part of American’s joint business agreement with fellow oneworld alliance member Japan Airlines.

This addition comes as the company prepares to lose its service from New York/JFK to Toyko; the last eastbound flight there will take place on Dec. 1, 2013.

     ‏@dfwairport: This makes 17 new int'l destinations added at #DFW in the past 3 years, for a total of 56 int'l, 148 domestic = 204 unique destinations.

    http://airchive.com/blog/2013/10/16/dallas-goes-china-american-airlines-launch-service-shanghai-hong-kong/

For its part Shanghai does not appear to offer American much on its face besides a decent chance at consistently filling business class cabins. Hong Kong makes more sense, as passengers can easily connect to further destinations in Asia via partner Cathay Pacific and, to a much lesser extent, JAL.

...American began service from DFW to Seoul, South Korea earlier this year in May, which along with today’s announcement bolsters the likelihood that Dallas is being developed in part for its ability to connect passengers onward through the network. In particular AA’s DFW hub is well positioned to access the carriers highly developed network into Latin and South America.

DFW is also largely untouched for expansion into Asia, leaving American free (for now) to try the routes out without any competition. The airport’s only other service to Asia is via Korean to Seoul, while the next nearest city to have any service to the continent is Houston via United to Japan and Air China to China.

  10. D/FW Airport plans for international expansion

    http://www.bizjourna...bal-portal.html

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is planning for significant growth in international destinations in the coming decade, a change that could position it to be one of a few “global portals” in the world.

When it comes to international flying, D/FW Airport currently hosts 12 airlines that serve 48 international destinations.

Airport CEO Jeff Fegan said the airport’s projection for the most-likely growth scenario over the next five years includes adding 26 new international destinations served by eight new airlines. That includes direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Barcelona, Istanbul, Lima, Quito, Bogota and other cities.

...described the industry as developing toward "global portals" that serve at least 80 or 90 international destinations, while also providing enough connectivity to domestic destinations to meet market demands....

Dubai, with 120 to 130 global destinations, is the world’s only global portal at present, Boyd said. But airports in the United States, particularly Houston, Atlanta and D/FW, are competing for the same kind of business in North America.

Spirit Airlines is growing again at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

The low-fare airline, known for its $9 promotional fares and $45 fees for carry-on bags, will announce today that it plans to add five destinations from DFW, including Baltimore and Houston.

The move will make DFW Spirit's second-largest hub, behind Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In a little over a year since it started flying out of DFW.

The Baltimore and Houston flights will begin in September.

  13. Houston: The Rushmore School

by Kyle Ryan June 11, 2012

    http://www.avclub.co...e-school,80949/

When we filmed the first season of Pop Pilgrims last year, we selected cities and picked three locations from each. I couldn’t make much of a case for Houston, and anyway, we had a great Wes Anderson location in New York with the Royal Tenenbaums house. This year, we let the locations, not the city, guide us, and considering what big fans we are of Wes Anderson here at The A.V. Club, it was easy to pick Houston and St. John’s. (I still haven’t received a citation from the city for bringing in literally dozens of production dollars.)

That wasn’t the only serendipitous part of Rushmore’s production. The crew distributed flyers at homes in the West University neighborhood, looking for a location for Rosemary Cross’ house.
