  1. I won't say much more about Tracy publicly that I haven't already.

I went to see these condos and they look good from my perspective. Only real drawback I saw was the parking. But no big deal for me. Another thing...I was told that another lender will charge more interest to finance a purchase here. Why is that? I was "recomended" to use the current bank which owns this property. Oh, why was almost every single property forclosed on? There are currently around 8 sold and another 8 or so under contract...total units are 44. So it's a very lonely building right now. Can someone post a little more history on this property?

  2. I read somewhere that the U-Line has many more complications, so the preliminary work is going to take longer. I'm sure it is in some preliminary phase now, but the actual ground breaking will come later.

Someone from Metro (I forget who) was at the University of Houston not to long ago and mentioned the same thing. The University Line would more than likely start at a later date, but (a huge but), it would finish construction in time to open in 2012.

  3. Metro deal with contractor for new rail lines breaks down

New company will pick up where Washington Group International left off

After more than a year of unsuccessful contract negotiations, the Metropolitan Transit Authority has ended talks with Washington Group International to be the prime contractor on four planned light rail lines.

Metro now will try to reach an agreement with Parsons Transportation Group, which ranked second among three candidates for the job when WGI was chosen in January 2007, Metro President and CEO Frank Wilson said.

Wilson said WGI will be compensated for $77 million in design and engineering work and that Parsons will build on that head start, allowing the projects to move forward on schedule.

If talks with Parsons end, Metro could turn to Fluor Corp., whose proposal had been rated third. Wilson said all three companies are competent and could do the job. WGI's subcontractors remain on the job, he said.

Because of the negotiations, Metro will not say how much it was willing to pay a contractor to design, build, operate and maintain the North, Southeast, East End and Uptown lines.

He said Metro and WGI were "hundreds of millions" apart. Earlier he had said Metro evaluates its entire Metro Solutions Phase 2 plan at $2.6 billion.

That, however, includes a fifth project, the University line, which is longer and likely to be more costly than the others.

Wilson said Metro plans to start construction on the East End line in June and on the North and Southeast lines in September. Construction on the Uptown line is expected to depend on funding for the University line.

"Our primary objective is to make sure the program doesn't miss a beat," Parsons' executive vice president, Tom Barron, said.

  4. So I've been in Houston for a couple months now. Where are the hair styling places? Are they just known by another name here? I say that becuase all the laundromats I've seen are known as Washaterias (which frankly sounds ridiculous to me)...Does this go the same for a hair styling place? I have yet to see a barber shop, I've seen a few spas...are those it? :( I apologize if this is in the wrong board. But can someone help me? I'm not looking for a barber shop...where can you get a trendy male haircut here in Montrose? or adjacent areas. Thanks

  5. Uptown Park is not a neighborhood per say, but it has great resturants and the people watching factors.

Other than that...have you been downtown?

Yeah..I really like downtown...I like the feel of it, especially Main Street...although I haven't been in the tunnel system, wonder how that is...Where is Uptown Park? (cross streets)

  6. My first selection would have been around Cherryhurst in Montrose, but that didn't seem to fit your definition.

I'll check this out tomorrow...I guess I'm in the wrong thread...I'm not specifically looking for mexican or latino neighborhoods any more...I just want to see some pedestrian friendly neighborhoods...or some cool places to people watch....Is there anything like Melrose here?

Otilia's on Long Point. 7700 block, west of Wirt has incredible Mexican Food....not Tex Mex. The Rita's are out of this world and you must try the Cream of Pablano soup!

I'll try that later on this week...thanks

  7. That's only because there aren't any.

NOt true...I just came back from Rice Village...it's very cool...many small eclectic shops and some big chains too....I liked it...Makes me wonder though....There has to be more little pocket neighborhoods like this. C'mon guys, there has to be more of this here in Houston. Many of the comments I've heard so far fit with the stereotypical views people from outside have of Houston. This HAS to be a world-class city. 4th largest city in the nation and no pedestrian friendly neighborhoods (besides Rice Village)? Are you sure RPS324?

  8. So I drove by the Eastwood neighborhood but I hardly saw any retail at all! Some nice houses but nothing more than that. I was thinking of something more like the neighborhoods in L.A. If you've been you know. East L.A./Boyle Heights has Ceasar Chavez, Highland Park has Figueroa, Lincoln heights has Broadway, El Sereno has Huntington Drive....I was thinking more along the lines of this. Is there such development here in Houston? I know L.A. and Houston are big car culture cities, but I can't really seem to find any pedestrian friendly neighborhoods here. Westheimer has lots of businesses, but you still have to drive from store to store. Thanks for the input though.

  9. it was going to be between rothko chapel and the menil collection, but never realized because of his death and appearent conversion problem from square-feet to square-meter... it was all on display at the menil collection a few years ago.

jurors of prizker gave him the award without actually looking at his projects. they saw his projects only on pictures, which were carefuly selected and slightly manipulated...

am i supposed to translate it into spanish? can i use freetranslation.com?

hehe..no translation needed...but thanks for the info!

  10. So, I'm in Houston now and am finding it very hard to get used to the weather. How do you people do it? Does anyone ever get used to it? It seems like you don't. Just yesterday I was walking in downtown and saw this lady faint in front of me. I got so scared! Luckily she came about right away. I asked her to stay sitting down, but she didn't listen. She actually thought I was trying to harm her or something. I felt some sort of prejudice from this lady (white, wearing a suit (education)- i might add)! I was only trying to help her. Oh well, I hope this is the only experience I go through if I decide to live here. Besides that, Houston's downtown looks very clean. Everything is close. Sporting events, convention center, shopping. Nice. Except, everything closes early, even earlier than Los Angeles. I went to the 2016 building, and it's actually pretty nice! The outside seems a little deteriorated, but oh well, can't have everything in life. People are extremely friendly. Went to a neighborhood bar close to 2016 and the people where so cool! loved it. I've been taking some pictures so I'll post them up when I get home. Cool city, bad weather. hmmmmm

  11. Hey all...

What can you guys tell me about this neighborhood? Is it safe to walk at night? It looks like the train isn't that far from here. What are the demographics? What stadium is that? Is it used? Looks a little cold because of all the concrete. Thanks. I will be in Houston next week, M-F. Still looking for a condo to buy. I hope it isn't so hot. Should I just take shorts and t-shirts? Is there cool night-life in downtown? Then again, I'll only be there in the weekdays. Oh, does anyone here play tennis? I'd like to play one of those days. I'm about a 4.0-5.0.

  12. You could, of course, call up Cambridge about some pricing (and a frickin' timeframe!) about The Metropole.
I tried e-mailing them, but their e-mail address is wrong. I got it from their website.
Yeah, but seeing as you're from LA, I doubt you'll have a hard time with it.

LA can get hot, but it never gets humid. But usually it's neither hot nor cold.

I've noticed many fixer uppers very close to UofH and they're priced very very low. I take it the neighborhood isn't that good? For some reason, I'm picturing something like South Central L.A. But in south central, the area changes drastically from block to block. Is it the same there?

  13. When is the Light Rail scheduled to be completed? Is it even under construction right now? That would be so cool if it was completed within the next couple of years.

You'd be extremely close to the hospital
Why would I want to be "extremely" close? :o
maybe walking distance in the dead of "winter."

Those comments scare me. Is Houston really that hot and humid? I wonder how people in downtown work, or anywhere for that matter, wearing suits? Are people always drenched in sweat? scary....so it really seams like Houston is not a walking town.

  14. Not sure what price range your looking for
I think that's my biggest set back. It's only $60,000. On the other hand, it's cash.
    MLS #7969613.
It looks good, but I think it's too much home for me. I'm thinking more of a bachelor pad, I guess that's why 400 sq. ft. doesn't really bother me. As for roommates, nah....been there, done that, don't want to go back. Are there any Condos around UofH? If not, maybe a little farther out. I definitely don't mind taking the bus to school...that's what I do now. It can definitely NOT be worse than L.A. Then again, I hope the public transportation over there is realiable. 1/2 hr - 45 min. would not be that bad to travel on the bus. I'm going to see how far I can get from UofH to areas around, in that time frame... unless someone already knows?

How is the area here? Looks like there are some inexpensive condos in that area, is there a particular reason?
