A Quick Drive Through La Grange

La Grange is greatness in a town. A magnificent view is on Hwy. 77 coming in from the south off the bluffs, where the CCC built a winding drive lined with handlaid stone walls that offers glimpses across the town through the trees. Unfortunately the steel bridge over the Colorado that it used to come across has been replaced by a modern concrete bridge, but there is still a great bridge on 71.

Christmas-season tours of the nicer homes in town and on the bluffs give you a great feel of Texas heritage and tradition. There are strong German and Czech elements to it all (the country club is named Frisch Auf!). The annual county fair on Labor Day weekend is a blast.

If you like this town, don't miss the smaller ones to the east along 159 and 237 - Fayetteville, Warrenton, Round Top, Winedale, Bellville. Great area for bluebonnets, antique festivals, summer concerts and Shakespeare.
