EMME
Hey EMME! Have enjoyed your posts on Swamplot, assuming you're the same EMME.Yeah, this thread was started back in May 2006, and a lot has changed since then. Now the thread has become the default repository for a lot of Heights-restaurant-related posts, and so it's gotten overly long. I like to see individual restaurants have individual threads (and some do) - but the one I started on El Gallo de Jalisco (a nice little neighborhood taqueria on White Oak with limited hours) got moved by the moderators (who are generally very good at tidying things up) from the Heights section to the general restaurants section, so maybe there's an advantage to having this one very long thread for discussing Heights restaurants, even if the title has become misleading. I think the Heights can claim pretty much all of these restaurants as at least "Heights-area" restaurants. A friend asked this weekend what the closest Indian and Middle Eatern restaurants are, though, and that stumped me a bit. Not a lot of Heights-area options there, unless I'm forgetting somewhere...Thank you, yes it's me, EMME from swamplot. My sister lives in Garden Oaks and she has to go across town to get Indian food. Mayhaps some Indian restaurants will see this post and come on over.

We could use one of those in the Greater Heights area.we could use one of those in houston in general. hot bagel is solid, but it's still not as authentic as i likegenerally, we need a good eat-in bakery. i mean, Dacapo's is good--- if you want what they have. they aren't open for breakfast and they close too early. i think we need a place where we can grab some pastries and coffee to go, have fruit breads and fresh bread all day long and cakes/pies whole or by the slice for after dinner. if they have ice cream, all the better...although some of you might remember, i've been lobbying for an ice cream place in the heights for a while now. tmariar
Interested to hear what Heights-area restaurants y'all eat at (or order from) most frequently, and if you have a standard order there. To keep us on the same page:(1) "Most frequently" - For this purpose, places at which you eat (or from which you order) at least 12 or more times a year (2) "Heights area" - For this purpose, let's broadly call it the area bounded by Memorial to the south, 610 to the west and north, and 45 to the east (3) If a place is new, or somewhere you've just discovered, go ahead and include it if your best guess is that you'll easily eat there at least 12 times in the next 12 monthsI think that the above criteria narrow my list down to just the below places. If there's something I order more often than not, I've listed it also.- King Biscuit (spicy fries)- Beaver’s (Nacho Mamma’s oysters)- Pink’s (Mediterranean)- El Gallo de Jalisco (tacos al pastor)- El Rey (ceviche)Anyone else want to share their list? If a number of people respond, I'll keep a running tally.
tanith27
King Biscuit (because I can walk there and they have great Jazz on Tuesdays). Food is standard, but really good when they get the outdoor grill going.Empire Seafood/Chinese: everything. This is seriously good food.Sweet Temptation: everything. FANTASTIC Italian for a third the price of the other fancy spotsPatrenellas: lasagna.Berryhills: easy and wifey likes the fish tacos. Spanish Flowers: gotta love 24hrsChilosos Taco House: seriously, 12x per year, I probably hit this quota in about 2 months.Carter and Cooley: sandwichesStella Sola: so far on par to hit it 12 timesDacapos: sandwiches and custom cakesOnion Creek: not so much because the food is good, but I usually need something to offset the pints with friends.Wow...looking at this I think I have a foodie problem. Actually......its not problem at all.
heights_yankee
Berryhill: when the weather is nice- or even veering toward hot- we eat there every Friday night Lola: every weekend involves at least one meal at Lola, typically lunch after a bike ride Pie In The Sky: it's new but based on atmosphere and pricing, we'll be there often Empire Seafood: we don't go but get delivery from them a couple times a month Dry Creek: again, nice weather means many trips to DC. it's ok for the service to be horrible when the weather is patio perfect. Antidote: it's not a restaurant but we "eat" breakfast there often and stop by for a drink to go several times a week. it's also late morning snack place when we head out for a day on the bikes. Chilosos: we would eat here a lot more if my husband had his way. breakfast tacos ONLY These places I wouldn't say we eat at 12x a year but we go regularly, probably 7-9x annually. Glasswall: this is our go-to for a nice date night or a quick meal at the bar before a show Stella Sola: where we want to take all our friends at least once, plus they've added brunch! Shade: nice family meals. out of town guests. I really don't consider the Washington strip restaurants part of the Heights. We've had this discussion on this forum but I consider an interstate highway a pretty clear line of demarkation and that area now even has it's own nickname: the corridor. so i do frequent some places down there (El Rey, Max's Wine Dive, Zoe's Kitchen- and Les Girvals once it opens) but I really in good conscience can't add them to my Heights list Edited March 31, 2010 by heights_yankee

The best stomach ache ever!I miss Mojo Risin on Shepherd - they had a really good breakfast bowl.okay - I admit - I don't get to the area like I used to so I probably won't be visiting them as much. I love the Cuban with the fried plantains.Beaver's every once and a while, more when I knew the bartenders- now I just go when I know they have the Real Ale Coffee Porter on tap, which is in the fall. All this talk about the Heights on here makes me want to wander deeper in. I live off Montrose and West Gray so I'm not far, just never venture that far north. Convenience obviously plays into it to some extent - places close to us, delivery and drive-thru places. Where we socialize is likely another factor (I think it's behind a number of these). The food has to pretty good, I'm sure, even if it's not the best around (if it's the best around, then it's obvious why we're regulars - I'm more interested in the other places we're regulars). Predictability/consistency helps. Perceived value. Habit. Kid-friendly for those with kids (and kid-light for some people without). Dietary issues/preferences. Can I get a much-needed adult beverage there, in some cases. It's a pretty day, where's a nice patio - that's got to be one. Wanting to support a place because it's local or helped save an historic building or puts forth an ideology we like or something. Knowing the owner/chef/bartender is important to some people. And some people will intentionally become a "regular" at a certain place because being a regular there fits in with a notion they have of where they'd like to say they're a regular (and hey, why not). Maybe I'm over-complicating it, or maybe our reasons are even more complex. Like I said - beyond my skill set. But I'm guessing that many of those factors have a role to play in whether a restaurant is a success b/c, while people raving about your restaurant is great, at the end of the day, what makes most restaurants successful will be those 12x regulars. I think. Am guessing.]Thanks again for the input! If y'all keep listing, I'll keep tallying.Recapping, the question is which Heights-area places do you eat at or order from most frequently? And:(1) "Most frequently" - For this purpose, places at which you eat (or from which you order) at least 12 or more times a year (2) "Heights area" - For this purpose, let's broadly call it the area bounded by Memorial to the south, 610 to the west and north, and 45 to the east(3) If a place is new, or somewhere you've just discovered, go ahead and include it if your best guess is that you'll easily eat there at least 12 times in the next 12 months

Porchman
The only two Heights places I go 12 times a year would be: Cricket's - Breakfast Berryhill- Fish Tacos, margarita, free chips. I eat/take-out from Jenni's at least once a month. I expect that I will be getting my fix more often. We really have enjoyed a couple of happy hours at Pagoda. I'm not sure if this will be an ongoing trend. I can't say that we don't eat out that much. We go to almost all the other Heights places 2-6 times a year, and sometimes, we cross out of the Heights and eat in other parts of the City. It's just so far, though.
