Avossos
Shepherd is looking good! They need to plant some dam trees in Sheppard. These new developments are nice but it is the opposite of green and the opposite of lush. I am amazed they can spend so much money on these developments without a landscape plan!

I couldn't resist Googling Mellow Mushroom after reading the HBJ description of "an Atlanta-based hippy pizza chain". I envisioned a place where psilocybe cubensis had once been the most popular pizza topping (inevitably leading to an unofficial motto of "our pizza will make you puke, but you won't care"), and judging from the pics at http://mellowmushroom.com/about/roots, I wasn't too far off. Of course, like many other establishments, it appears to have evolved into just another hipster haven pushing craft beer, its original brand comfortably diluted and sanitized for consumption by those who wouldn't know the difference between a cow patty and Shinola. Oh, the humanity!
txcat84
Why the negativity? (Or maybe I'm misreading?)I like Mellow. There's one in BR and Lafayette where I'm currently stationed and I have always enjoyed it.
mkultra25
Not so much negativity as amusement. I'm sure I'll give them a try once they're open. And I'll be thinking of Duane Allman when I do.
s3mh
I used to go to Mellow Mushroom after little league games in the 1970s. The hippie thing was just a marketing gimmick to get people to try some different and odd concoctions on pizzas back when there were very few options for really good pizza. It will be nice to have something other than Pinks for pizza night.
mkultra25
I've picked up a lot of pizzas from Pink's since they opened, but at this point I've gotten pretty burned out on them. Chicago Italian Beef & Pizza on Airline is better.

mollusk
No surprise that the el is getting reshuffled again. We ate there. Once. Mediocre food (at best), served not necessarily hot, or even warm, at a pace that would have been OK had the place been jammed (as in, "who do I have to take hostage to get my order?" slow). It wasn't busy - not by any standard - and certainly wasn't "Superior." I'm usually willing to give a new place a second chance, but the Director of Domestic Bliss was even less impressed than I was (or perhaps more so, since the fish tacos seemed to be a bit "off"). bedmondson
This is a big deal for beer nerd types. Not sure where all the money is coming from but to be able to pull in a brewer that is currently working with production similar to Saint Arnold is impressive. I would hope that means they are going all out and from the sounds of the press release they are. Along with the multi-million renovation of Fitzgeralds nextdoor it seems this intersection is getting its revitalization revitalized. haha. My wife and I stopped in on Friday night after dinner and were very impressed. We only had time for one each so we tried both of the IPA's and they were both good. The feel of the place was very friendly, very neighborly. And since it's walking distance from the house, it could be the local we've been looking for. The crowd was on the younger side, 20's and 30's, but very Heights-esque with several dogs running around. And at least for now they have parking access in that lot on the corner of Main and Cavalcade.
9075
I never ate at The EL. After hearing that a few people got food poisoning from eating there, I was always afraid to try it. I'll probably try the beer place when it opens, though. Glad to hear that Town & City is doing well. We've been patiently waiting for them to open, and we plan to make it over there in the near future.
BullMan008
I ate at the El. I never pay attention to others and their opinions on any businesses in the neighborhood. I thought I'd give it a try because it was new and they had a good location and I like Mexican food. There are way too many crappy folks that like to put down businesses behind their keyboards.I tried it and I knew that there were other choices close by that were cheaper and the food was better. Beer was nice and the decor was cool. Fun fact: there was a lowrider bike at the entrance to give it an authentic Latino look. In the early to mid 80's, there used to be kids that would ride these bikes from their home to Stude Park.

Hsu's design is stunning. Also peaking in the Foreign Correspondents build out, they have some fun murals on the wall. I hope it is more accessible in terms of an easy place to get in and out for a weeknight dinner without blowing out your budget for the week. Hunky Dory and Bernadine's definitely look to be very pricey, which is understandable given the cash they put down on building out from the ground up. But Foreign Correspondents is going in an existing space. Hopefully that will allow them to have a more moderately priced menu. Lee's Fried Chicken and Donuts is supposed to be doing a soft opening in the next few weeks. 8 Row Flint looks to be close to completing its build out but no word on an opening schedule. Will they "revamp" the place again andfads try 4 different concepts in 3 years? Can't help thinking that being in such a small space next to a pay day lender and mattress store is helping. MaggieMay
I dont think its location next to those places mattered. I do think that the inconsistency of their food and drinks does. Its a nice small location. Recently in the Houston Press : Interestingly, Ken Bridges of Delicious Concepts announced this morning that Witchcraft Tavern & Provisions Co. will re-emerge as Republic Diner + Sojubang, “the area’s only kitchen and bar offering a Korean menu.” I liked the curries at their original place. The Witchcraft Tavern was handy for a high-class burger & craft beer before or after a visit to Kroger; also for the occasional happy hour, with interesting snacks at the bar. Never made it to the "new" place. The revamped bus system has made access less convenient (while making many other places more convenient). And the "no lunch" policy made it useless on the weekend. Location might matter for a place with what appeared to be a trendy, pricey, mostly-appetizers menu. Perhaps more suited for those hitting another bar or restaurant nearby, or looking at some interesting shops or galleries. Bundled with a trip to Kroger, Ross or Tuesday Morning, not so much. Hope the new plan works out. Meanwhile, the El Cantina Superior remains shuttered. Their site promises a "Relaunch" but there has been no sign of work. (I think a Brewpub was mentioned.) Too bad. The location is great & they put a lot of work into the place. But, except for the period when the Liberty Kitchen people had their hands in, their Tex-Mex was definitely sub-par...... HeightsPeep
Unfortunately, the urinating in yards really did happen when Gelazzi tried to become a bar. For the TABC protest, neighbors had to take time out of their lives because the noise, urinating, parties.. was so incredibly awful. Gelazzi would not negotiate with their neighbors to limit the negative behavior. And as a result Gelazzi was denied a TABC license. You can read the TABC docs. I did just for fun because my neighbors had a copy. Many people showed up to testify about the poor behavior they witnessed from patrons and the owners. . Let's hope the people at Connie's Pizza are able to exercise enough control to make sure adequate restrooms are provided. Right now they do not have enough restrooms or parking per City code to operate a restaurant. I hope they will do the right thing and install restrooms the public can actually access. Also, Gelazzi/Connie's Pizza is not functioning as a take out place. Pinks is a takeout place; no tables, no eat in. However, people were eating pizza at Gelazzi, this weekend, both indoors and outdoors. This reminds me of the crawfish place the City shut down because they had tables. Remember that? Do you even live in the Heights? I had a slice at Pinks with my kids just this past weekend. They love sitting at the tables with the stools that spin around. Gelazzi served ice cream. They never served a drink. Neighbors were upset with Coltivare and presumed that Gelazzi was subterfuge for a Washington Ave. bar. It wasn't. it was just a hard working couple who opened a little ice cream shop that is loved by the neighborhood that can't serve gelato made with liquor ('cause everyone knows that if you want to get rowdy drunk, you eat a bucket of 5% ABV gelato). The crawfish place on 11th shut down last year because the crawfish season was over. They are back open with lots of people gobbling up mudbugs and peeing all over people's porches all weekend. They had tables too. Better call the city and shut them down. Maybe they can share the pad Funky Chicken left vacant with Connie's pizza so our neighborhood can stop being so damn walkable and full of great places to eat.
