i guess i am being a bit bitter. there are just so many great

figures to pull from houston's founders. even a young millie

esperson? i guess i need to remember that it isn't for the city

of houston it's really for a pay-per-park lot.

Here's an idea: conceal inflatable breasts in the pedestal, to be revealed on festive occasions (Mardi Gras, Superbowl LXX, etc.)

It could also be used as a fundraising device. "For every $1000 collected, she expands one cup size! And we're not leaving until Elegance turns into Anna Nichol! Remember...it's for the kids!"

See how great art inspires creative thought?

IT'S THE CORPSE BRIDE ! YIKES !!!

Who wouldn't want a big statue of Randy Quaid? Can you imagine that? It would be so funny.

We'll see how funny it is when we petition to put it in YOUR frontyard missy !

You could be on to something, dbig. The jaw line and cleft chin are just a little too masculine. And the eyes; they look almost Asian.

I think it was modeled after Richard Chamberlain in Shogun.

Another Adickes Attack

Houston sculptor David Adickes, who has given the world a giant Sam Houston, a giant George Bush and a giant telephone, has a new piece of art on display.

It's a woman's head. (Giant, of course.) Sitting next to the light-rail line at Leeland and Main, the sculpture graces an abandoned drive-in bank now used as a parking lot.

The critics at the Houston Architecture Forum are, it's safe to say, not impressed.

The discussion boards at its Web site have an official name for the piece: "Big Head on Main Street." The general feel of the online conversation might be indicated by the fact that it includes pictures of The Simpsons' Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel.

"In fairness, I just got a glimpse of the thing, but got the impression that it was the sort of sculpture one might buy at the airport as a last-minute gift, but on a grander scale," one poster wrote.

"It's The Corpse Bride! Yikes!!" wrote another, obviously more a fan of Tim Burton than of Adickes.

After the Houston Chronicle quoted passersby calling it "gorgeous" and "peaceful," a poster wrote, "That's not what the dude standing next to me at lunchtime said. 'What the f*ck is that' were his remarks...He thought it was a monument to drive-in banking."

The perennially misunderstood Adickes could not be reached for comment, but then again we weren't using a giant phone.

Not exactly, but close enough. Good plug, eh?

Glad Richard Connelly found our comments amusing enough to use in his column, and hope it brings in more HAIFers.

did it have any HAIF quotes?

There's a link to the Chronicle article at the top of this thread. It appeared about the same time this thread was started, so no HAIF members were quoted.

In an article in the May issue of Houston Intown Magazine talks about the big head, construction and concept. While I wasn't really paying attention to the thread overall (but I did read it for the comedy), I thought it was interesting on what was supposed to be the concept of this thing.

While it was supposed to be intended as a destination marker of sorts, I don't really see it happening unless the construction of the Pavillion takes place.

Editor: Since the chron piece was made, has there been an influx?

I don't want to seem ungrateful for the Houston Press mention, but I checked the logs and it appears to have had zero impact on the number of people coming to HAIF. Still, it's nice when members of HAIF are recognized for their contributions.

And so what exactly is supposed to be the concept of this thing? Why would a vacant lot next to a vacant building need a destination marker to begin with, much less a big head?

Well, turns out the owner of the land is friends or something with the sculptor. Eventually when the site is built up, they're hoping they use it as a marker for people to meet at like they do at Grand Central station "information counter" in NYC. It's titled "looking forward".

Maybe I'm not that bright, but other than the fact that it's facing the east towards a sunrise, I don't quite get it.

The artist (who also created the big president's heads), is also making Statues for George, Paul, John, and Ringo that are going to be erected at I-10 @ Shepherd. To those of us that are too young to remember: they were a member of a band called "The Beatles". Why THAT particular location, I have no clue.

corners around market square

I noticed someone recently stole the two faces on one of these markers. This is on the south corner of Travis. I think they have been missing for about two weeks. Cool man-gargoyle things.

Or maybe they are just on vacation?

i think the head is much better loooking than the sculptures(?) look like giant dildos that are placed on corners around market square. i think those need to be taken down before they start doing something on the head. :angry2:

which sculptures are they?

i am drawing a blank or when i saw them

they didn

It was my understanding that the sculptor had bought some parcels of land along freeways to use for displaying his works. At least I-10 @ Shepherd would have more visibility than that lot next to the Savoy where the Big Head is.

Btw, there are only two degrees of separation between Adickes and myself. It turns out he is an acquaintance of an acquaintance. Big Head, Small World. ^_^
