i like the aeros ( i know...). i'm sure they'll be completely forgotten about if NHL moves here...

Exactly, this city can barely support the Aeros, and they make it to the playoffs and still nobody turns out. I have gone to a few games, I love Aeros hockey, but I am not a hockey fan.

But there are a LOT of Yankees in Houston, and quite a few Canucks. Four transplant friends form the north have already emailed me saying they would buy season tickets. I think the reason there are not a lot of hockey fans in Houston is beacuse we never had hockey. But then again...we would have "fair weather" hockey fans just like we ahve "fair weather" basketball fans. Just wait until the Rockets reach the finals this year and all of the sudden we have 2 million Rockets fans (we couldn't even get 10,000 in the stadium 3 years ago.

MLS will also succeed here.

I think both major league hockey and soccer would do well in Houston. Houstonians hadn't really supported the Aeros too much becuase they aren't major league. Maybe Houstonians think if it's not major it's not worth their time.

As a die-hard Houston Cougar fan, I sure know that's the truth.

Luckily, Tom Penders is putting UH basketball back on the map....Phi Slama Jama II coming to Hofheinz in less than 3 weeks!

I don't see the Penguins ever leaving Pittsburgh.

Of course, I'm one of those people who thinks that hockey shouldn't be played in cities where it doesn't freeze.

that explains why Wayne Gretzky's now coaching in Phoenix  who knew?!

if we get MLS AND NHL, we'll officially be on the major sporting map.

We may also get NFL Europe training camp here too!

Someone tell the Astros and Rockets....oh, and the Texans.

We're not officially on the major sporting map, now?

Someone tell the Astros and Rockets....oh, and the Texans.

Honestly, we're almost there, but no, we are not where we should be on the map just yet.

Why? Here's my 4 reasons:

1. EVERYTIME I watch baseball, and they're talking about the legendary OR best baseball teams, they always talk about the Yankees, Red Sox, the Cubs (lovable Losers), and even the Dodgers and Cardinals. Basically every team with a payroll in the top 10 in baseball are considered worth talking about to them. They almost NEVER add our two Texas teams as legendary teams. To the baseball world, we've only had one legendary baseball player prior to the year 2000, and that was Nolan Ryan. I'm sorry, RedScare and TJones, but to be perfectly blunt, even though the Astros made it to the World Series, the Houston Astros are not even CLOSE to getting the recognition that they deserve.

2. The Rockets. Remember when the Rockets won their first NBA title, and not even Sports Illustrated was willing to put them on the cover because we beat the Knicks in the Finals? But the Knicks, Bulls, Pistons, Lakers, and Celtics are ALWAYS talked about as teams to watch. Even San Antonio had to kick and scream in order to get the respect they deserved this season. The Rockets have TRACY MCGRADY, YAO MING, DEREK ANDERSON, AND RAFER ASTON ON THEIR F*CKING STARTING LINE-UP, AND WE GOT EITHER STROMILE SWIFT OR JUWAN HOWARD ON THERE TOO!!!! WE GOT JEFF VAN GUNDY as coach. But not even FoxSports thinks the Rockets are in the top 5. http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/powerRankings I ALWAYS hear of Shaquille O Neal and Wilt Champerlan as the best centers in the NBA, but I NEVER hear of Hakeem Olajuwon. I NEVER hear of the 1993-1994-1995 Rockets as a championship team to be talked about. I rarely hear of Rudy Tomjonavich, Les Alexander, Gene Peterson, Calvin Murphy, Elvin Hayes, or Carroll Dawson getting their dues for what they have done to the game of basketball. The Rockets, like the Astros, are not even CLOSE to getting the recognition that they deserve.

3. The Texans. New team; hosted the Super Bowl once; have David Carr as quarterback; have a 1-6 record so far this season. That's ALL I've heard that's going on so far. Once again, they are new. They still are trying to develop into a team as historically known as the Packers, Cowboys, Raiders, or just about the other 28 teams in the league. The only way they have any significance for the time being is a positive financial status. But as far as the playing field, they haven't been around long enough just yet to claim they are something to watch on the football map. Again: yet.

4. Houston, Texas is the ONLY CITY IN THE WORLD TO HAVE TWO RETRACTABLE ROOF STADIUMS. We were the FIRST to have a dome. We have one of the most luxurious basketball arenas in the world with Toyota Center. And we currently have the largest convention space in America in Reliant Park. But when it comes to the sports world talking about the best facilities in the sports world, I NEVER hear our stadiums getting their architectural dues. Football: Cowboys Stadium, Lambeau Field, that stadium almost built for the Jets. Baseball: Wigley Field (sux), Fenway Park (bigass green wall), Yankee Stadium (memorial in the back), PacBell Park (San Fran Bay), Turner Field (hosted the opening games in the Olympics.) Basketball: Madison Square Garden (rundown), Staple Center (OJ drove past there in the police chase I think), American Airlines Arena (Mark Cuban), The Palace (um, yeah). All our facilities are underrated. http://football.ballparks.com/ Where's Houston's names in ANY of the top stadiums in America, much less the world? And we have'em, too.

Having a team doesn't put you on the sporting map. Having THE team does, and so far, our historical sporting significance is not recognized. Is Orlando, Milwakee, Kansas City, San Diego, or the L.A. Clippers on the map simply because they have teams?

Our teams exist, but they deserve respect as well. And once they do get that respect, we'll be on the sporting map.

Nah man, I got slapped by Rick James a few years back...

RJames204.jpg

Seriously, when the teams deserve respect, they will get it. Until this year, neither the Astros or Rangers made the World Series in over 40 YEARS. Until last year, neither team won a series of any kind.

Texans are 4 years old and going backward. The only place where Texas pro teams get respect is the NBA, where last year, all 3 were given legitimate shots of going to the Finals, and SA won their 3rd trophy. And, as stated many times before, the media is concentrated on the coasts (not Third Coast), so the bias will always go that direction.

In certain circles, the Astros get respect for having a tough team for the last 10 years. The Rockets are regaining some respect that was lost after the early 90s. The Spurs and Cowboys are always near the top, if you consider all of Texas. But, it will take repeated success over a period of years to get the respect you are talking of.

Overall, Houston is known for being a sports town, and the new stadiums helped that image. MLS and NHL would be nice as another option, but are nowhere near the Big 3 in pro sports.

CHARLIE MURPHYYYYY!!!

I'm just fustrated. WE know Houston as a big sports town, but does the world of SPORTS see us as a big sports town yet? There's a difference between us knowing what we have with our teams, and Westside Tennis, and our facilities, but it's another thing when we get constantly overlooked for big sporting events that we Houstonians feel we had the sporting history and facilities for (Super Bowls, Olympics, big college Bowl games, conferences.)

But I do look forward to our city being one of the few sports towns to be home to the six biggest sporting leagues in America. Major step.

RedScare, what do you make of the NFL Europe story?

I think it would be pretty cool to get it, though I don't see it as so big that we MUST have it. Mostly, I see it as my law school buddy, Oliver Luck, using some of his NFL Europe connections for Houston's benefit.

Back to your other post, most observers say that Reliant Stadium is one of, if not the best football stadium in the world. Packaged with Minute Maid and Toyota, Houston has the best stadium combination in the country. As for Super Bowls, Olympics and other events, it is the politics of sport that influences that. Remember, the ONLY reason Houston has not gotten another Super Bowl is Bob McNair's activities regarding money distribution within the NFL. None of that has to do with Houston or its facilities.

Also, remember, Houston is getting some NCAA regionals and the Final Four in a few years. The bowl game is working to move up the ladder, so that if and when a college football playoff is started, Houston will be in the rotation. That pretty much adds up to money, so we'll see what happens there.

My one regret is that the Track & Field Astrodome plan never materialized. We would have owned T&F championships if that would have occurred. Oh, well.....

Astrodome will make a good convention Hotel like they've now proposed (soon I hope). But Rice Stadium hosted a Super Bowl once. It held around 70,000-75,000 when it hosted that game. It's getting older, and could use a revitalization. Rice University is THE IVY league school of Texas. Couldn't that stadium be redone for football AND as a top notch track n field stadium for World championship events?

the board of trustees and university officers would have to be convinced to put the $$ there...

  • 2 months later...

on sportscenter last night, when they were talking about Lemieux retiring, and selling the Penguins, they mentioned they thought the team would most likely be moving since he was keeping them afloat. then they said Sydney Crosby would need to start looking for a new house, and he would probably get to live on the ocean, either in "Portland or on the Gulf of Mexico in Houston".

means nothing, but cool to hear them say NHL and Houston in the same sentence on ESPN.

It's difficult for me to see the Penguins leave Pittsburg.

I do think Les Alexander will be successful bringing an existing franchise to Houston. I'd go for Nashville personally B)

it all depends on who buys the team. Lemieux is selling, and if they don't get a new arena in Pitt they could be leaving. Isle of Capri is trying to get a gambling license, and are looking at building a casino/arena in the city, but they won't know if they get the license until the end of the year. they're competing with several other casinos, all which have no interest in building a new arena.

Remember all those public airwaves fights between Les Alexander and Chuck Watson/Bob McNair back in the late 90's? We probably could have gotten an NHL expansion franchise had those two groups gotten together and settled all the bickering. One thing is for sure, you don't see Chuck strutting his stuff around anymore since Dynegy's stock collapsed and he was fired.

I totally agree that if they worked on the same side, we probably would have already had an NHL team. Fustrating, isn't it?!
