"Two Houston consortiums confirmed they have submitted bids to the federal government for a piece of $8 billion in funding for regional clean hydrogen hubs.

According to the Department of Energy, the money will fund six to 10 so-called H2Hubs intended to scale up the commercial production of clean hydrogen. The funding will come out of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The HyVelocity Hub bid was submitted by a consortium led by the nonprofit Center for Houston’s Future, the University of Texas at Austin and the nonprofit GTI Energy. The other group, which is led by Southern States Energy Board and includes the University of Houston among its academic partners, submitted the LIGH2T Hub bid."

Houston won the bid. Some good news for the area.

The Houston-based HyVelocity hydrogen hub is among the seven across the nation selected by the Department of Energy to receive billions of dollars in federal funding to support the development of the clean hydrogen industry, the Biden administration said Friday.

Members of the HyVelocity hub include the University of Texas at Austin, oil majors Chevron and Exxon, gas supplier Air Liquide, AES Corp., Mitsubishi Power Americas, Ørsted, Sempra Infrastructure, the nonprofit Center for Houston's Future and GTI Energy, a research-and-development nonprofit.

The Houston hub would produce hydrogen both from natural gas, using carbon capture to mitigate emissions, as well as hydrogen made through renewables-powered electrolysis. It is expected to create 10,000 permanent jobs and 35,000 construction jobs over the next decade, the Department of Energy said. Construction on Gulf Coast projects could begin within three or four years....

The local effort will be supported by up to $1.2 billion in federal funding and is expected to be the largest of the seven hubs in terms of clean hydrogen production. The project was among 79 proposals submitted last year vying for a piece of the $7 billion pie established as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Great news!  This seems like it might be a good deal bigger than the customer service hub awarded to Dallas

Haha indeed! Although, they're not even worthy of comparison.  The DOE hub is many many billion dollars of direct private capital that WILL be invested into the region, jobs, etc. then all the indirect jobs, impacts of this can't quite yet be quantified. This is really big deal and nothing short of an absolute game changer for Houston.

"LyondellBasell confirmed its plans to convert its Houston refinery into a hydrogen facility during an earnings call Friday, saying the soon-to-be-shuttered facility is now on track to participate in Houston’s HyVelocity hydrogen hub, one of seven hubs selected earlier this month by the Biden administration to receive as much as $1.2 billion each in federal funding."

"Plans for the hub include both green and blue hydrogen production, salt cavern hydrogen storage, a large open-access hydrogen pipeline, and multiple hydrogen refueling stations. Todd Shrader, a project management director with the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Division, said during the webinar that salt storage would be used to enhance total storage capacity at the hub.

Trucks powered with hydrogen fuel cells would also make up part of the hub economy. At least 10 hydrogen fueling stations are set to be installed on routes between Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, according to a preliminary construction map shared during the Oct. 30 webinar."
