Hey Guys,

What do you think about this? Apparently Houston is setting up a Downtown New Year's Eve party that we haven't seen before and the Art Cars will have a big role...

"Make room New York City. Move over Paris. Houston is poised to launch a New Year's Eve celebration certain to put this city on the map of year-end countdowns. At least that's the plan of the city's Downtown District.

Gloworama, the inaugural illuminated Art Car parade that lit up the George R. Brown Convention Center and Avenidas de las Americas last November, has morfed into a major New Year's Eve celebration of light, blazing art cars, music and sophisticated outdoor partying that will spread across Discovery Green.

Highlight will be the midnight countdown with the "Big Glow" beginning at 11:30 p.m. The Downtown District and the Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department have planned a stunning 3D light show and a fireworks display at the convention center that will escort Houstonians into 2011.

The party action will begin at 7 p.m. with ice skating demonstrations on the ICE at Discovery Green, live music on the Anheuser Busch Stage, performances by America's Got Talent's ArcAttack and more. At 9:30, the art cars, light up like Christmas, and the accompanying illuminated bicycles, uncycles, buses, at least one hearse, a few incarnations of Santa and whatever else the zany art car artists can fathom start rolling.

If viewing it all from Discovery Green or along the street isn't your thing, a limited number of VIP tickets are available for the pre-Glow party at the George R. Brown. The tariff is $150 per person for access to some of the best views available for watching the parade and the light show, plus food and drink.

Insiders have already begun booking rooms at the Hilton Americas-Houston for a front-row view of the festivities. Those living in One Park Place, the luxury high-rise overlooking Discovery Green, will also have premium sight lines."

Take a look at the surrounding areas... with all the bullets fired into the air I'm sure this is going to be one heck of the party! :)

I think me and some friends are going to get a hotel downtown and party there before/after the event... I'll report back on how it goes.

This peeked my interest until I read "family friendly alcohol-free event". Perhaps I will goe to Warren's and then make it to the park.

Ya that's why you need the hotel to pre/post party. Also Four Seasons and Hilton are both having hotel parties (Four Seasons has a party in the lobby Ithink)

Also, drinks will still be served at Hilton, Four Seasons, the Grove and the other Cafe on the park I would think. I wonder how many people will show up...

I stayed in for NYE and actually watched some of it on Channel 13. After about 90 seconds of lighted hula-hooping, we switched the channel to Andy Cohen. Gina Gaston seemed a lot tipsy and was sporting black leather gloves, despite it being 60 out. Looked like the kids were having fun, though.

Maybe this is an anecdotal sign of economic recovery-- the quality of fireworks shot off by my neighbors was much higher this year than in the past 2, and only 1 gun shot that we heard.

I'm rather curious what the attendance numbers were. I do hope they change the name, though. Quite a few of my friends who watched enjoyed the show overall and were thinking of going next year.

I'm a litte late on the response but I have to say I definitely had a good time... but I was only at Glowarama for about 45 minutes (we got there just before they started doing the fireworks).

Other than that it was a solid downtown night. Dinner at houston pavilions, followed by Four Seasons hotel party, then Glowarama and back to the hotel again... the suite was pretty cheap (I guess cheap compared to what I expected) - only 267 with tax and it was an excellent room. The best part of it was that downtown was absolutely hoppin - people all over the place.

I'm just happy to see a major public/outdoor NYE event in Houston and I hope it gets bigger, better, and more adult oriented. If someone does comes across the attendance numbers please post them.

Yeah, because I think Dallas is the only Texas city with a NYE event (though I'm sure SA has one). They're clever, in that they always have a Stars game that lets out right when "Big D NYE" starts. Hopefully Glowrama grows. I believe the Rockets usually have a NYE game at home. Maybe they could try directing a lot of the crowd towards Discovery Green (what a great development this is turning out to be). They need to put some fireworks on the top of the GRB.

For sure man. They had fireworks but they weren't as high as I wanted them to be.

Houston needs to add a New Years Eve Celebration like it had in the past. I can remember the bands/performers in years past, the night art car show, the fireworks, the George R Brown light show and all the fun downtown. I also remember Gina Gaston and Tom Cook hosting and broadcasting from downtown for ABC13 with different reports throughout downtown reporting back all the fun. So who else agrees that Houston (the nations 4th largest city) needs to bring back a New Years Eve Celebration downtown. And it should have something uniquely Houston to drop for the countdown. So come on Mayor Sylvester Turner and other Houston leaders. Make this happen! Let ring in the new decade (2020) with a New Years Eve Celebration downtown again.

It sounded like a full on war over here on the west side last night....

Skirmishes still going on tonight.

I can definitely tell between the fire works and the rapid fire gun shots.  pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.

Scary to think where those bullets are going.  Into peoples bedrooms and living rooms? Thought a Menninger staff member got shot & killed due to celebratory gunfire?

Edit:

January 1, 2020;

HOUSTON – A Houston family is facing a grim start to the new year after their family matriarch was shot and killed by what authorities believe was celebratory gunfire.

Philippa Ashford was a nurse at the Menninger Clinic for more than 12 years. She was the manager for the “Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment Service, a hospital program for adults who need stabilization and assessment for their mental health symptoms or detoxification from substance use.”
