Someone may have already pointed this out, but the guy with the Mohawk is Christian Armheiter (sp?) He was/is the lead singer/guitarist for The Hates, a Houston punk band that dates back to about 1978 or so. Haven't seen him in years....cool that he still has the hawk. Here's a link: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/mu...al/4009595.html

If I'm not mistaken that vato was the meter reader for HL&P in my hood for ages.

What do people think of Houston? I know from past encounters that alot of people think we all have boots and cowboy hats, and ride our horses into work.

Even I have a different opinion of Houston now, and I've lived here almost 20 years. Back then, downtown was hell and Midtown looked like Detroit. Main Street on the weekends was a zombie film backlot. The Wortham Center had already opened for a while, but Houston and urbanity hadn't reconciled their differences yet.

Went for a walk around DG yesterday afternoon and once again it was packed w/ people. Lots of families out w/ kids playing in the fountains... people using model boats in the lake... lots of people eating and just walking around... people playing football and frisby on the lawn... people also playing at the putting green. The park was packed. I also noticed they added a few items to the menu at the Lake House like I hoped they would. :-)

Seriously... this park is turning out to be a HUGE success... great job Houston!

On saturday there were even kids swimming in the pond! Lots of them!

They eventually got kicked out though when they swam to the backstage area of the Beatles cover band.

why why why would anyone swim in that...I guess the parents don't have common sense to know that it is not a pool...

I took my daughter to DG on Saturday morning. There were a lot of folks in the park, even with the overcast/drizzly weather. They still had the Saturday morning yoga on the stage, which was really cool to see in such a setting. There was also a child's birthday party going on. The fountains that the kids can play in are very cool.

I've got to say, this is a gorgeous park in a great setting: convention center on one side, skyscrapers on the other. Toyota Center on one side, MMP on the other. I'm really proud that we have something like this in Houston and I can see its popularity exploding.

Kids will jump into any puddle deep enough.

I think Coog's digging himself deeper and deeper. He should just hush while he's ahead

And when i finally have kids, i'll be sure to keep them away from desirous. His comment sounded a little Michael Jacksonish !!!

Please note nowhere did I say them swimming in Kinder Lake was a bad thing. As a wise person observed, "that's Texas 2008."

You see new things every day.

Of course that water quality is not that great for swimming.

Swimming in that lake is bad. Please let's stop it at that and let's not get personal. I live in surburbia Manvel and have visited the park twice. We dined downtown on one of those visits. My wife can't have enough of the park. By the way we lived in SW part for 3 years and never visited DT. Great to have something to cheer downtown apart from the Rockets.

Not much of a baseball fan I guess. ;)

The other day about 5pm I heard all this loud music coming from DG and wondered what could be happening on a Monday afternoon. It turned out to be one of the fitness classes the park puts on. I was not close enough to get a good estimate of the number of people but it looked like a really good crowd sweating to some salsa music...

The last weekend the Astros were in town, on a Sunday afternoon, and I saw about a dozen or so people with Astros gear on tooling around the park, so I suspect that a good number of them use it (or have used it) prior to or after a game. We'll see if that becomes routine, like going to the B.U.S. or Home Plate.

I was raised in Africa where football rules- I mean the one you play with your legs. We learn other sports in high school. Basketball is one of them, baseball is not, American style football is not. I cheer Astros because everyone at work is crazy about them, and I like to be a proper Houstoninan.

I play basketball sometimes but don't even know how baseball is scored...

I suppose somewhere along the line I missed that there's always jazzercise class, or native dance demos and tai chi and stuff. Constant programming. Truly a park for the ADHD world. Do they have a no-added-stuff night? Adult swim?

Me, I'm happy with an expanse of green, some dogs running around, and a place to get a beer. Assuming I'll be spending a few hours, some food. And it should not be difficult, exclusive, or overly expensive. The COH really needs to unf*** itself with regard to street food vendors, and get some tacos or some hot dogs on the streets downtown.

I still have not gone there, but I was around there yesterday evening around 6:30. I was downtown picking up some Astros tickets for a later game. There were some vollyball tournaments going on at the GRB, so Disco was packed with a lot of those folks. It looked like a party at the Grove as well and there were tons of kids playing in the fountains.

you can get a temporary tattoo if you want. ;)

i personally wouldn't recommend the grove. went yesterday and service was horrible. there were more waiters/waitresses there than customers. food was lukewarm and the bacon on the burger was almost raw. if you can afford $8 for a well drink and $12 for a call, this place is for you!

Well, I know one vendor is taking advantage and making a mint at DG and that is the bicycle ice cream vendor that works downtown selling Mexican Popsicles.
