In Midtown, at the corner of Elgin and Austin, sits the large colonial-style white mansion at 3208 Austin St. It was built in 1913.

It was formerly Trinity Foster Care, and before that, "a house... for Sallie Horton, daughter of Edward Sewall, vice president of wholesale grocery company Carson, Sewall and Co." (source: Houston Business Journal)

More discussions on the white house or white mansion at 3208 Austin, on the corner of Austin and Elgin in Midtown.

The property was sold around 2009 or 2010. Lucky Chopra of  Landmark Houston Hospitality Group purchased the property.

Wheeler Rescues Historic Buildings in Houston-Will Be 3 New Restaurants

Posted by Cleverley at Saturday, November 10, 2007 10:51 PM and is filed under Houston Restaurant News,New Restaurants

I spoke with Rhea Wheeler and he told me that he and his partners have formed a company and they are buying historically significant properties inside the loop in Houston. They will be turning them into restaurants. They've been working on this for the past two years and have purchased three properties so far. Right now they are getting bids from architectural and construction companies for renovating the acquired properties.

Wheeler is working on the three new restaurants simultaneously and he hopes to have them all open by the end of 2008.

The buildings include:

. Austin & Elgin, (Downtown)

An historic white mansion that will feature fine dining in the Texas cuisine genre.

Name of this new restaurant will be the Houston White House.

There was an article in the Chronicle today outlining some new developments in the Midtown area that sound incredible... Houston Chronicle

It's great to hear that that nearly 100-year-old mansion will be saved. Kudos to Atul ChopraI for finding creative ways to save old Houston buildings.

The building at Austin and Elgin was much better looking before it was painted white some time between 1999 and 2002 (I don't remember exactly when that travesty occurred). It will be interesting to see just what the new owner does for renovations.

The owners of Hearsay were planning to convert the mansion into a restaurant called The White House, and they were going to put a sushi restaurant in the Boy Scout building. I guess those plans fell through.

I noticed this too, but I think it will be good for the area. It looks like a nice office/admin building. They've owned the land forever, and considering they own almost every house on the street across from the White House already (used for housing even, not an office/admin), I don't see why it would have any impact on the project. They also own the most incredible old white house mansion one block down as well. Last I heard (when eating at Hearsay) is that the project is just slower because they are figuring out a way to do construction on the White House w/out tearing up the historical insides too much.

I had the chance to meet with Lucky Chopra the other day and he said that his company is moving forward with the White House restaurant at Elgin and Austin street... new roof coming in May.  I though this project might have been cancelled so this is good news.

Old articles on the white house or white mansion at 3208 Austin, on the corner of Austin and Elgin in Midtown.

From Swamplot December 2007:

A big white house dating from 1913 at 3208 Austin near Elgin in Midtown will house Wheeler’s second new-restaurant-in-old-digs, named White House. It’s the former home of Trinity Foster Care. The new restaurant will serve Texas cuisine, but won’t open until later next year, after a kitchen is added to the back of the building.

From Houston Business Journal December 2007:

Midtown White House

The second site on Restaurant Group's menu is a large white house -- which will likely be named White House -- built in 1913 at 3208 Austin.

The neoclassical residence originally owned by George and Sallie Horton exemplifies an architectural style popular throughout the South in the early 20th century.

The Midtown property, most recently occupied by a foster-care organization, was purchased by a Restaurant Group affiliate in September from Advanced Education Services for an undisclosed amount.

Miller of Camelot represented the buyer, and Alice Lougin of Keller Williams Realty Inc. represented the seller.

The 5,000-square-foot White House will add another 800 square feet in the back for a new kitchen, and eventually will seat 160 to 170 patrons.

Two chefs from the Houston area have been hired for the first two restaurants, but Wheeler won't disclose their names until they leave their current positions.

Hearsay is slated to open in the second quarter of 2008, while White House will finish its prep work in the third quarter.

...Wheeler is as excited about the old buildings as he is about the food he plans to serve in them. He wants to save the properties and others like them, as a way of giving back to the community.

"Let's quit tearing down beautiful buildings that can be saved," he says. "Let's spend a little more time and effort and money and put these restaurants in a building that's significant.

"I love history. I should have been a history teacher," he says.

... Another restaurant, possibly to be named White House, will be located at 3208 Austin in a house built in 1913 for Sallie Horton, daughter of Edward Sewall, vice president of wholesale grocery company Carson, Sewall and Co.

... Restaurant interiors are being designed by Martin Huber Miller of Houston-based Martin Huber Miller Modern Decoration.
