“French Cowboy” Philippe Schmidt has a new restaurant in the works in Montrose

Philippe Schmidt, the chef behind a number of French restaurants in Houston including now-shuttered Philippe Restaurant + Lounge, Toulouse in River Oaks, and Bistro Moderne at the Hotel Derek, has a new project in the works. Documents filed with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission indicate that the spot, called Cafe Philippe, will be located at 1830 West Alabama Street. That’s the former location of Italian restaurant Divino, which closed July 31 after 20 years in business.

In an email, Schmidt declined to elaborate on the new spot. No word yet on an opening timeline, but stay tuned to Eater for more details.

Looks like plans have changed but work has started on "Sunrise Breakfast House" opening Spring 2023.

I think one of the co-owners of Kiss (restaurant in Sawyer Yards) may be involved in Sunrise Breakfast House. I'm not entirely certain. HCAD hasn't updated the records on its site yet, but one of Kiss' co-owners purchased this property last month.

Glad to see new life coming to the old Divino space at 1830 W Alabama. Montrose is filled with fine places for breakfast and brunch.  I hope Sunrise Breakfast House will be a good brunch addition.

There is a recent building permit for 1830 W Alabama purchased by Maurice Ojeda. Ojeda owned a few bars, most notably Capitol Bar in Midtown, which closed during the pandemic.

I think instead of Sunrise Breakfast House, the name is The Sunrise House.

The Sunrise House is undergoing renovations at 1830 W Alabama. Taking over the former Divino space, The Sunrise House will be a breakfast and brunch-forward restaurant. This is a new dining concept from Strickland Hospitality Group. The hospitality team are also partners in Kiss and forthcoming Palapas with Cle Group.

There is an Instagram account for The Sunrise House. Several photos (actually, one big photo) was posted two weeks ago. The restaurant is aiming to open this spring, according to their Instagram bio.

I am now the director of Andrew Durham gallery directly across the street 1821 W. Alabama, from Sunrise House and wish they would hurry up an open.

They just came out and painted over the recent graffiti. Next time you're in the neighborhood come by and say hi and check out the art.

Our current show features works by Ann Stautberg, and Frank X. Tolbert 2. I have a show opening May 6th. Love to see all.

The Sunrise House posted a 3D rendering video of the restaurant last week.

According to the video, NHI Design designed the space. NHI Design is the interior designer behind RockHouse, Rare, Lost & Found, Kamp, the Warwick, and Bar 5015's remodel.

Next month is when the breakfast and brunch eatery anticipates opening.
