Where Should Houston’s 1st Casino Resort Locate?

Recommended Posts

I've got a friend that lives in Galveston and he claims he knows some electricians that told him the Tillman had the San Luis pre-wired for slot machines. Probably a BOI myth but who knows. Tillman isn't part of these ads that are running.  I doubt he wants to lose all the money he has spent in his Lake Charles casinos. I think a central location in Houston would be best with access to lots of hotels so somewhere close to downtown would work best.

Both bills proposing the constitutional amendment to allow a “destination resort” are likely to die in committee this session. The House at least gave HJR 133 a hearing in committee, but it was left pending. If it doesn’t make it out of committee by May 10th, it’s dead.

I've also heard the slot machine myth.   I agree a central location Houston would be great to take advantage of the already exiting hotel infrastructure.

I guess those casino owners against it have given more under the table money than those for it.

I'll take a contrary position on this.  Most likely they'd not want to locate where there are a lot of hotels because they would want to build an attached hotel/resort and profit on that as well.  They'll be looking for (relatively) cheap land to build a full resort on.

I could see them doing that. Maybe somewhere along the NE Grand Parkway. Lots of undeveloped land out there. Not sure if it's cheap though.

It'll probably be Clear Lake and/or Galveston. They're already tourist destinations with a billionaire casino owner who also owns majority of the attractions.

Would hate for it to be Downtown or Uptown. Gulf Coast casinos and their hotel buildings are usually awful looking. Doubt we'd see something cool like the Cosmopolitan or Aria in LV. Although the kitschy building might fit in with a few condo buildings around lol. Randall Davis & Tillman collab? Imagine how gorgeous.

Probably myth.  We heard the same silliness when they built The Post Oak.

If I were to build a casino in the area, I would definitely head West of town.    Try to pull in some of the San Antonio and Austin customers.  Somewhere along Columbus/Schulenberg, if you can find enough land.

The problem with that is the proposal also calls for San Antonio and Austin to get their own resorts. I’m guessing these results will mostly be regional attractions. Austin and San Antonio could build a mega resort together around San Marcos.
