hindesky
So I came across a couple of guys taking down the drive-in theatre screen, so this might mean something, either winter has caused people to not go to drive-ins anymore, the Moonstruck in Midway's East River project has overtaken the market or this project is about to start up. Hoping for the latter.
JBTX
My money is on the latter. The drive in has been packed as if late. I can see it from my living room. Alternatively, I wonder if maybe they are making a bigger screen? Edited January 3, 2021 by JBTX Added alternative.
ljchou
Per the drive in website it looks like December was a "soft launch" with discounted ticket rates. I'm thinking they may be prepping for something more permanent. (https://rooftopcinemaclub.com/houston/venue/the-drive-in-at-eado/) I have a feeling the development of this lot for "The Mill" may not take place in the short term. I haven't seen any paperwork for restrictions or permitting yet.

The shipping containers were taken down today. Looks like they are also bringing in some stones to lay out as a non-grass surface in the lot. 1
hindesky
Rooftop Cinema officially opens The Drive-In off Navigation Joey Guerra January 8, 2021Updated: January 8, 2021, 11:29 am The Drive-In off Navigation is ready for its close-up. Rooftop Cinema Club's newest venture has its grand opening Jan. 21 at 2300 Runnels with what is being billed as the largest screen in the city at 64 feet. Masks will be required to go to the restroom, pick up concessions or anytime you're outside a vehicle. The grand opening follows last month’s soft opening, which included several screenings of "Elf." The venue will be open Wednesday-Sunday, with two screenings per night. Tickets are $22–36 per vehicle, depending on vehicle occupancy and day, and are on sale now. Children ages three and younger will not count as vehicle occupants. JBTX
Looks good! There is also a sort of shop looking thing (maybe where the food trucks will go?) in the back corner of the lot, closer to the existing structure. I saw them putting it together last night. I'll try and grab a picture.

Triton
Would be really cool if Houston could build something similar to San Antonio's Pearl District somewhere on the East End. Seems like the perfect vibe for it. Feels like we don't really have any grand farmer market type areas established and San Antonio's is absolutely massive with many tents and offerings. At first this project kind of reminded me of it but I am not so sure anymore. 4
wilcal
My first thought for a Pearl a la Houston would be the coffee plant, but honestly it might not be big enough. Surely these large industrial users in the East End will start to fall and someone will go big.

When thinking of the Pearl in San Antonio I think the best location for recreating that historical setting would be Imperial in Sugar Land. You definitely lose the proximity to downtown but just a couple of cents to throw in the pile.

Parking issues. Regarding 2: the lot there is very soft. They only brought in a few trucks of rocks to pave it. I suspect this creates a giant mud pit after it rains. I suspect this is the primary reason for the closure as I have seen a few 18 wheelers dropping off materials recently.

thedistrict84
Good to know the time table on this, we need more of these predominately market-rate housing and premium office and retail developments to come online in this area soon, to help offset all of the affordable housing planned. It is nice to see a developer in tune with the history of the area and going out of their way to emphasize not only reuse of existing buildings but using materials that are consistent with existing building styles.

I don't see anything, from a professional's viewpoint, which could not be done from what has been exhibited. If you are interested in what this project looks like then take a look at the threads for 888 Westheimer, The M.K.L, and Zadok Jewelers. All Michael Hsu projects of different types, with the same style of eclectic materials, and wide range of uses in each project. 6
