hindesky
This bugs me so much and it's been like this for a long time. I had it my mind that the company rebuilding the Ardmore bridge would fix this but they didn't. It's about 10' long but always has water/mud in it. Columbia Tap northbound at S.McGregor Way.

I would file a 311 report and then contact whoever the rep is for that district. What is the exact location? I'd be happy to help.
august948
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if you can get in trouble if you decide to fix this sort of thing on a public trail/sidewalk? Would there be an issue if a concerned citizen decided to spread a few bags of gravel on a low spot like this?

BeerNut
You could probably install your own bike lanes and the city wouldn't know until everyone started posting how much they loved the new bike lanes. 2

I often contemplate forming a volunteer group devoted to shoveling the 55 years of silt out of the damn streets, removing pieces of busted curb that broke off in 1979, and cutting the rebar that’s sticking out of sidewalks everywhere cause god knows the city won’t ever do it. But then I think about getting killed doing it, sued somehow, or how I am too busy...so I just delicate flower about it instead.

I've seriously considered taking a weedwhacker to some areas of sidewalk that get overgrown along the routes I bike.
samagon
I know it's mostly a rhetorical question, but I think you have to pull permits, and again, legally, the work would have to be done by someone bonded and insured, and probably approved by whatever committee at the city level, so legally you could be accountable to whatever rules are in place for not following those things, but they'd have to catch you first. permitting guys don't work Sunday, and I doubt a police officer is going to consider it a good use of their time to question your doings. heck, on this particular bike path (and the bayou path on Brays) I regularly see 4 wheelers, and gas powered scooters being used, so yeah cops definitely don't care. displace the dirt with a few bags of whatever, I don't think anyone would stop you, especially on a Sunday. samagon
I hope that's paint that doesn't become slippery when wet. something, something, more harm than good.
Texasota
Despite the headline, the Planning dept and Public Works were both involved with this, so they should have made sure they used the right paint.

hindesky
Once again there are criminals attacking cyclist on the Columbia Tap trail, this happened before with several robberies done by young kids. Luckily they got caught and it seemed safe to ride again. I quit riding it for about 2 years when it happened the first time because I was almost alway riding by myself. When they caught them I once again felt comfortable in riding it. A rider posted this on Reddit today.
BEES?!
There’s another reddit post from this morning, sounds like this happened again yesterday afternoon at the section just north of TSU. This was posted by a woman who says her husband was jumped and pistol-whipped while on his bike, and is currently in ICU. She says that he was riding and came upon 4 guys who were blocking his path, and they robbed him. Same guys, maybe?

samagon
probably all linked. I read that thread on Reddit, sounds like the kids are exceedingly stupid, so they should be pretty easy to find. just another place to add to the list of areas not safe to ride.
HtownWxBoy
Wow ... live along this trail and bike it all of the time from EaDo down to the Hermann Park / Med Center area ... and i'm almost always alone. It always seems so safe I'll be stopping that for now.
HoustonMidtown
Channel 13 is having an update on this at 5:00pm. I saw their camera man on the trail near TSU - he said a press conference had just finished. I also saw 2 uniformed police officers riding the trail - they said they are ramping up patrols - I asked if they had caught anyone, they said not yet Edited May 30 by HoustonMidtown

hindesky
"After five cyclists were attacked in the past two weeks on a bike trail stretching through Third Ward, Houston Police Department officials planned to increase patrols and conduct undercover operations to take back control and promote safety along the trail. Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said investigators believe the attacks, while random, are connected. He said the crimes — which include a shooting — likely were committed by the same people, a theory authorities developed because similar methods have been used in the execution of each attack. And while police have some leads they have been working to catch those responsible, they continue to ask for the public's help to identify the assailants." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/trending/article/columbia-tap-bike-trial-police-increase-18127694.php

The bike path itself is more Bagby than a traditional bike path, which I love and I think will encourage all modality of uses. I know this group has been around for a while, but it seems like they are finally beginning to get plugged in to the right people given the public workshop I went to earlier this year. To be honest, they could carry this concept all along the TAP trail, there's so much land around the trail that is just empty. Unfortunate that the section between 45 and TSU could really hamper usage of Goal Park even if they execute some of the vision. Hoping COH develops a long term vision for 45-TSU TAP that promotes safety, illumination, and maybe improved land usage along the trail. I see people just sitting along side the trail, if city dropped some trees and even some cheap kids playground items, it would be a huge change. Much like the Goal Park changes things for the east side residents, basically anything COH does to the 45-TSU TAP is a huge win for the 3rd ward residents (although that may encourage some amounts of gentrification, which I know Shabazz and co are sensitive to).
hindesky
"Two teenagers were arrested in connection with recent robberies on a Third Ward bike trail and more people could be arrested in the future, the Houston Police Department announced. Two 17-year-olds, Deion Christten and Willie Carroll, were charged with robbery and evading arrest, according to HPD. The arrests come after police said at least five cyclists were attacked on the Columbia Tap Trail." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/trending/article/columbia-tap-bike-trail-arrrests-18137795.php https://abc13.com/columbia-tap-trail-attacks-cyclists-attacked-and-robbed-crime-spree-investigation-houston/13350748/
BEES?!
Article talking about the trail from Houston Landing. I wasn’t aware that it wasn’t under the purview of the parks dept. it would probably be a smart move and help develop it as more a linear park and keep it well-maintained and safer along the whole stretch.
