Nonsense. It's hard not to make an erection joke every once in a while on a forum about skyscrapers. What's the prob anyway. All buildings have to be erected don't they? I think a 30 story building would be extremely hot and sexy on that block.

Looks like they are paving over the tripping hazards around the block. They have a skid steer with a jack hammer to remove the higher obstructions, dump truck with asphalt, and a roller. I assume this is so that people going to get popcorn and drinks don't trip at the drive-in theatre.

Not a big fan to be honest. I would prefer a much denser development, especially if you take into account the property immediately behind this corner lot which I think they also own. Get the street in-between removed, and you could build something really impressive.

What possible benefit would there be to removing the street? Both lots are already quite large; combining them into a single enormous suberblock right in the middle of Montrose would be awful.

I do agree that the Helsinki development is too low density, though it's worth keeping in mind that building that here would double its height with a giant parking podium.

I mean, I guess they could just build a large structure or skywalks to bridge over the road, but I don't think getting both those properties is a coincidence, and the possibilities of that much prime real estate at the junction of two of Houston's busiest and most important roads is just too good to pass up.

Skanska does not own the “Disco Kroger” lot. An outfit out of Georgia bought that.

Skanska's empty Montrose site livens up with new market, music

A fallow corner of Montrose will be enlivened with an open air market featuring music, food trucks and farmer's market starting this weekend as part of an initiative of Skanska USA Commercial and a local company.

Skanska brought in Curb Coalition to host a pop-up Curb Market along with a variety of events on its site at 1001 Westheimer at Montrose Boulevard. Skanska purchased the 3-acre tract last year for $27 million as a future development site that could include apartments, offices, shops and a hotel.

"Skanska is thrilled to welcome this local organization onto the site to host engaging community programming while the team finalizes their development plans for the upcoming project," the company said in a statement.

A shopping center was torn down in March to make way for the development, for which no timeline has been announced.

For now, the land is a blank slate for Curb Coalition to create "new concepts capitalizing on the artistic essence of the neighborhood," Skanska said.

Curb Market – Montrose will showcase offerings from traditional farmer’s markets such as produce, jams and jellies along with crafts by local artisans reflecting Houston's diversity. The products will include paintings, handmade jewelry, home goods, vintage clothing, holistic products and more.

This weekend kicks off a soft opening, starting Friday and Saturday from 6-10 p.m. Night Market & Live Concerts will feature performances by local bands, a food truck court, crafts, drinks from local bars and other family-friendly activities such as yard games and face painting. On Sunday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.,Variety Market & Family Fun will bring a market, live acoustic music, brunch drinks and food offerings.

Skanska is among a number of Houston developers that have sought to maximize land holdings before development commences. Midway's East River site is being used for Moonstruck Drive-In Cinema east of downtown and multifamily company Barvin hosts the Braeswood Farmers Market on Stella Link and Braeswood where a mixed-use development is planned starting next year.

You've got to be kidding.  This is one of the most visible and potentially vibrant corners of central Houston and they came up with a design that belongs as an addition to Co-op City in the Bronx.

I'm not ever really negative on HAIF, but that looks like ass when considering where this is.

But I'm sure Gensler knows the significance of this site and the area, so I have faith. If they come out with a basic podium structure though, we might have to mobilize a resistance force.

Good thing for all of us here is that OMA is the architect, not Gensler.  And while the designs are preliminary, they are incredible.  Like nothing currently in Houston, extremely ambitious.  I'm hopeful they get put out in the next few months.

I talked with Tommy the superintendent of the 1550 On The Green when he was setting up the water filled barriers on the street. Asked him when Westmont would start and he told me they are finallizing plans but also said it would be a while before they decide.

I assume they work in their local office when not at the job site and during company planning meetings. I'm just repeating what he told me. I also asked him about the the lots across the street from 1550 On The Green and he said those could be an office building and the other a hotel and either condo's or apartments on the upper levels, like The Allen is. Tommy is a real nice guy and easily approachable. I've talked with him a couple of times. He also told me he gave one of the tenants of One Park Place his cell # and she has called him several times asking when the pile drilling was going to finish. It was very loud and I guess she was tired of listening to all the noise.

Its never a good thing to just 100% trust anyone, but OMA has a really stellar reputation. Even their worst stuff is really good in comparison to others. They are probably one the most serious architecture offices around. I'm interested to see what they do now that they have done Post, how do they approach the Houston market? Not sure honestly. Its weird talking about firms like OMA and BIG in regards to Houston, but this should clue in people to how much bigger Houston is going to become, and impact of people moving from other places to Houston this will mean. Both firms regularly like to position their work/themselves in "emerging markets" or what they perceive to be so.

In terms of size and big city vibe, Houston is really on it's own in TX. For all of it's mishaps and mistakes, this city boasts some of the most urban, densest, eclectic neighborhoods in the entire state. The presence of architecture firms this large and well known is something I feel a lot of us are forgetting or taking for granted. It's firms like these that basically put a city on the map at a much greater level in terms of being a "cool, socially accepted city." Whatever get's developed here is going to have a massive impact.

No offense to Dallas but no. I've been to Dallas many times and while they have some areas that have real potential, they still lack a lot of development in the inner city. People always talk about how spread out we are but Dallas is not only spread out but it has massive gaps in it's urban fabric.
