VicMan
Continental Airlines should aggressively pursue the naming rights to the Dynamo Stadium. The airline had been named the official airline of the Dynamo: http://ro-a.redorbit.com/news/business/128...namo/index.html, so there's no conflict of interest regarding another airline. - Continental could, at some point, get more revenue by getting the naming rights. It makes sense since CO is based out of Downtown - also CO flies to many Latin American countries and could advertise its brand to the futbolistas from Texas to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.BTW the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ used to be the Continental Arena. Maybe CO could recycle that name for the Dynamo stadium. Edited May 19, 2009 by VicMan

rsb320
Well, Swamplot is running an article, just today, regarding changes to street and rail configurations, because of the stadium. Houston19514
This week's HBJ has an article saying that "only minor hurdles remain before construction could begin this fall" on the new Dynamo Stadium. Also, "Two other key parts of the stadium completion puzzle have fallen into place, including the hiring of New York firm Populous as project designer. Populous created the design for the two palatial baseball stadiums that opened this year in New York, including the new Yankee Stadium, as well as Citi Field, home to the New York Mets. The Dynamo stadium will include an upper and lower bowl structure, with a club seating area and 32 or 34 suites. RedScare
Populous was formerly known as HOK Sport and designed MinuteMaid Park and Reliant Stadium, a fact that escaped the notice of our local journalists.Just as I predicted. Houston19514
Just as I predicted. :D So I guess that will be the journalists' excuse. "How were we supposed to know; we couldn't recognize that foolish name..." (I too wonder about the name change. Presumably, they are splitting off or planning to split off from the mother ship?) Ducky
"The area for the stadium will be pretty tight, because the six blocks run quite long but are narrow, but they've come up with a rough design that shows the area can adequately serve a stadium," says Luck, who points out that the proposed downtown rail line extension would stop at the north end of the venue."That's great - the area itself is barely large enough for a stadium. You would think they would try and identify an area that didn't force them to squeeze and scrimp to make it work.

kyle
They should just put it by TSU-- since TSU will be playing in the stadium too. I'd love to see several acres of land by TSU turned into a stadium and parking lots!

houstonranger
I think they plan to share parking with Astros? There is hardly ever over lap in games so no big deal.Plus the crowds are much smaller at 20,000 so should not be a problem.Lets just get the stadium done, its too important for all sorts of economic / social / prestige to Houston etc reasons to mess around any longer

They have indeed made plans "on the parking side for the proposed area". They will use the Astros lots. As HoustonRanger said above, the Dynamo stadium will be approximately 1/2 the size of MinuteMaid Park, so there should not be much of a problem (plus there will be a Metro Rail station at one end of the Dynamo Stadium, providing additional relief. arisegundo
The thread subtitle could use a change, barring some cataclysmic development. And seeing as the stadium site is within walking distance of the Second Ward, it's definitely convenient to at least one large segment of the Latino community. Old predominantly-Hispanic Second Ward neighborhoods are within 1/4-mile of the stadium site, however, just across the railroad tracks, in the vicinity of Settegast Park. Predominantly-black neighborhoods don't kick in until about a mile away, either to the northeast or south, and they're separated from the stadium's neighborhood by freeways and a veritable river. Ducky
I suspect the image isn't of accurate proportion and that the stadium will appear to be noticeably taller than that in real life.If they sink it into the ground they shouldn't need to go above 4 or 5 stories. Anything taller would be overkill. And those silly white tents they put on everything these days (airports, etc) are probably great during hurricanes. lockmat
In the spirit of building a new stadium, I found this book that might be an interesting read... Field of Schemes is a play-by-play account of how the drive for new sports stadiums and arenas drains $2 billion a year from public treasuries for the sake of private profit. While the millionaires who own sports franchises have seen the value of their assets soar under this scheme, taxpayers, urban residents, and sports fans have all come out losers, forced to pay both higher taxes and higher ticket prices for seats that, thanks to the layers of luxury seating that typify new stadiums, usually offer a worse view of the action. The stories in Field of Schemes, from Baltimore to Cleveland and Minneapolis to Seattle and dozens of places in between, tell of the sports-team owners who use their money and their political muscle to get their way, and of the stories of spirited local groupsālike Detroitās Tiger Stadium Fan Club and Bostonās Save Fenway Park!āthat have fought to save the games we love and the public dollars our cities need.
