I found the TABC notice in the window of the building on the property, although it is far from conspicuous.  It confirms New Mangolia Brewing Co. as the applicant for the license

From Swamplot on 1616 Bevis Street:

another local warehouse is now turning to drinks as its primary occupation. This 7,725-sq.-ft. one — pictured above from Bevis St. between W. 16th and 17th — is about to become New Magnolia Brewing. Its name is a cheers to the original Magnolia Brewing Company — formally the Houston Ice and Brewing Company — that did its concocting along Buffalo Bayou at the corner of Franklin and Milam streets until Prohibition forced it to make ice its flagship product. Following its shutdown, the Magnolia Ballroom took the place over roughly 40 years ago.

The New Magnolia’s 43,560-sq.-ft. digs at 1616 Bevis include this front yard, more than twice the size of the building to its north

From Houston Chronicle yesterday:

Another brewery is moving into one of Houston's transitioning urban neighborhoods. Shady Acres will soon be the recipient of New Magnolia Brewery.

The city recently approved a building permit to convert a 7,500-square-foot warehouse at 1616 Bevis St., just east of White Oak Bayou, into the brewery's home.

The new spot will add to Houston's 14 craft breweries and 50 craft brewpubs, according to Houston Beer Guide.

The original Magnolia Brewery was downtown at 715 Frankin. The building was the first commercial building in the city to receive the Houston Protected Landmark designation in 2006. It was built in 1893 and redesigned in 1911 for the Houston Ice and Brewing Co., which brewed the Magnolia and Southern Select beers.

From The Leader today:

They (Shayn Robinson and his father-in-law, John Ferguson) plan to open New Magnolia Brewing Co. in the late summer or early fall at 1616 Bevis St. in Shady Acres.

“We’ve had a good time with it,” Ferguson said.

The upcoming brewery, which sits on a 1-acre plot of land that will provide ample parking and patio space on both sides of the under-construction taproom, will add to an exploding craft beer scene in the area. There are 10 other breweries in the Heights, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest area, with Astral Brewing and Walking Stick Brewing Co. having opened within the last six months.

The newest addition pays homage to Houston’s beer-making roots. Robinson said the New Magnolia name is a tribute to the original Magnolia Brewery, which Hugh Hamilton operated in the city from the late 1800s until shortly before Prohibition in 1920.

“...Once we dug into it, we said, ‘We just can’t pick a name off the street. We just can’t come up with some whimsical, carefree name. We need something that’s Houston strong, Houston deep,’ ” Robinson said. “We did the research, and nobody had trademarked or kept the Magnolia brewing (name). They abandoned it in 1973.”

set to open 22 November.

New Magnolia Brewing Co. plans to open to the public Nov. 22 at 1616 Bevis St. in Shady Acres. The brewpub started as a joint venture between Shayn Robinson and his father-in-law, John Ferguson, and two months ago they enlisted another beer maker with an impressive pedigree.

Sean Spiller, a Houston-area native who previously worked for Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. and 8th Wonder Brewery, most recently was the senior brewer at Jester King in Austin. Jester King has a reputation as one of the best breweries in Texas.

“When Sean came back to Houston and accepted the offer here, it made a pretty big splash locally,” Robinson said. “We needed somebody who had great industry experience, and we needed to kind of energize the whole process.”

New Magnolia plans to offer 10-12 beers from the start, including an ESB, hazy IPA, hefeweizen, kolsch, pale ale, pilsner, porter, stout and a Grodziskie, which is an oak-smoked wheat beer. Through Dec. 31, it will be open from 4-10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from noon-10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Spiller said the brewery wants to provide a communal atmosphere, similar to what he experienced in Austin. Robinson said it will be kid-friendly and pet-friendly with spacious seating inside and on both the front and back patios.

“Being able to provide something for the neighborhood here is really what we’re after,” Spiller said. “We’re interested in making small quantities and high-quality beer for our immediate area.”

Penciling the date in. Good to have another brewery in the Heights area.  I hope the trend of repurposing warehouses continues outside the loop as development and gentrification inches closer beyond the South and East loops.
