Sammy's Wild Game Grill restaurant closed in February. It was located in Washington Plaza at 3715 Washington Avenue, Suite A in Houston.

From Facebook

Unfortunately, we will be closing down February 24th. Bad location, no parking & extreme increase in rent has left us no other option but to shut it down. This will be the end of this location but not the end of our concept and brand. Our plan it to continue to provide great Wild Game meals to all you Wild folks out there. To all our customers, thank you for supporting us for 8 awesome years and many more to come!!!

Coming to Washington Place at 3715 Washington Avenue this summer, Voodoo Doughnuts.

It will replace Sammy's Wild Game Grill restaurant at 3715 Washington Avenue, Suite A.

From Eater Houston:

Voodoo Doughnut, Portland’s offbeat fried dough specialists, will open up a shop in Houston this summer. The chain, known for its doughnuts in creative shapes and flavors like Bacon Maple Bar and Portland Cream sold in bright pink boxes, is expanding throughout the nation. Voodoo Doughnut opened up in Austin in 2015, and according to a press release, Voodoo is opening in Houston on Washington Avenue in late summer.

“We are ecstatic to continue our expansion in Texas, adding to our existing location in Austin,” Voodoo Doughnut co-founder Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson said in the release.

“We look forward to contributing to the Houston community and eager to find amazing people that thrive in a fun, high energy environment to join the team. Get ready to see our iconic pink boxes in the coming year!”

Houston’s home to a lively doughnut scene. But fans of Voodoo Doughnut will be able to get doughnuts 24/7 at the Houston shop, which will be open at all hours of the day and night. The Houston Voodoo Doughnut will also be home to the chain’s first drive-thru location.

Update: A rep from Voodoo Doughnut shared that the Houston outpost will be located at 3715 Washington Ave.

I was thinking a few months ago that a Voodoo Donuts would kill it in Downtown Houston. So happy to hear they're opening a location in town but very disappointed with the location. In fact, I can't believe they even chose that spot given the poor accessibility, lack of parking and proximity to foot traffic. I can think of at least 5 other locations that would be better (Market square, Midtown, EaDo, westheimer in montrose, and White Oak)

Have they opened multiple locations in one city before? I know that the last time I checked, they typically only have one location per city. But maybe they could buck that trend if they do well in Houston, who knows! But yeah, agreed that the location could've definitely been better. Downtown/Midtown/Montrose would've been amazing.

I'm not a fan of Voodoo  but as a location, depending on how much of this space they grabbed, could be great. Yale/Waugh is a significant thoroughfare for commuters and this location already has a drive thru.  (Sammy's speed of service  was not conducive to a drive thru IMO).  In all, I think this space will suit a doughnut shop better than a restaurant/cash store/dry cleaner.

Yes a typical donut shop, like a Krispy Kreme, would probably do fine here. If you’ve been to the original in Portland or the one in Austin then you know that those locations are always busy and are a huge draw for all the city/night goers who are in the area. So having their Houston location in a more walkable area would give it more synergy with the neighborhood. Even if they think that Washington Ave is where they want to be, there are better spots. In any case, I hope they do well.

Voodoo Doughnut at 3715 Washington Avenue, Suite A in Houston appears on a trade map for another property listing.

This is under construction in the Washington Place retail strip. It's replacing  Sammy's Wild Game Grill restaurant.

Someone asked about the opening status on the Google listing for Voodoo Doughnut in Houston. Another person replied it's opening in the fall, at least that's the response provided from corporate.

Yes there is active work going on now. Most I've seen since the announcement. Doesn't seem close though.

Admittedly, I have contained my excitement about a forthcoming doughnut shop. This may be more difficult to do after a quick look at their website.
Sha-ZAM!

Washington Avenue location is expected to be the first of many in Houston.

Those stores might go in Montrose and Rice Village and then expand to suburban areas like Katy, Sugar Land and The Woodlands.

...there are no plans to expand to other Texas cities like Dallas or San Antonio.

“Houston’s our primary focus right now,” Schultz said.

With the expansion into Houston, Voodoo Doughnuts is entering its first new market in five years.

in case anyone wondered, the place is a huge success...thankfully it is open 24hrs a day 7 days a week so the lines aren't always super long but this is from the Houston Chronicle on opening day...line wrapped around the building and later that day the cars were backed up through the light going through the drive-thru:

Fat chance! Even if we were ever blessed with decent sidewalks, they’d need to be wider than ever imagined to support the doughnut hips. This place has had a line for 8 days straight now. Day and night, rain or shine. On a related note (kinda), SN22 is having an AARP walk study performed at all the major intersections along Washington. I have no idea what it’ll influence. I mean it doesn’t take a study to confirm that the streets and sidewalks are total crap. ;)

Hmm how often are studies like this done?

The Portland-based chain, famous for it colorful doughnuts in offbeat flavors, will open at 1214 Westheimer Road, in the newly-revamped shopping center that previously housed Erotic Cabaret and Nidda Thai.
