Houston private school reveals plans for 11-acre prime plot

More than two years ago, St. Thomas High School purchased an 11-acre tract of land adjacent from the school from Houston Independent School District for $66 million. Plans for the land off Memorial and Shepherd have finally been revealed.

Currently, HISD's High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice campus sits on the land. St. Thomas will renovate those buildings and convert the school's indoor shooting range into a wrestling room and the school's library into a student center, Mark deTranaltes, vice president for advancement at St. Thomas, told the Houston Business Journal. The newly renovated campus will be dubbed the Jane and Bill Joplin Campus, to honor the St. Thomas alum who donated $6 million to fund the land purchase.

St. Thomas will also utilize the high school's auditorium, which can occupy more than 630 students, and convert its cafeteria into a weight training room. The HISD school also includes a natatorium, a regulation-size practice basketball gym and locker rooms. St. Thomas will relocate its baseball field to a separate portion of campus and add two new practice fields.

Houston-based Kirksey Architecture designed the renovations. St. Thomas is now in the midst of a $12 million capital campaign to fund renovations and field installations and has raised just under $3 million, deTranaltes said.

After years of planning, one of Houston’s oldest high schools is moving ahead with the construction of a new baseball park, which the school hopes will help attract aspiring Big Leaguers and provide new streams of revenue going forward.

Building permits issued by the city of Houston say that St. Thomas High School has broken ground on a $7.9 million, 4,400-square-foot baseball park. The new ballpark will replace the school’s existing Father Wilson Field and will be large enough to accommodate 440 fans. It will feature chair-back seats, a cover over the seating area, covered batting and pitching cages, a video scoreboard, a concession stand, a press box, locker rooms for home and visiting teams, and turf manufactured by Austin-based Hellas Construction — the same company that installed the turf in NRG Stadium for use by the Houston Texans. Houston-based Vaughn Construction is serving as general contractor for the project.
