Tumbleweed_Tx
I'm going to try to keep an open mind in that diamond at the top until the building is done, but upon seeing it IRL for the first time the other day, a derogatory word synonymous with happy was the first thing that popped into my head....
Texasota
I'm not familiar with a derogatory word synonymous with happy. What would that be?
Buy-U-City
Seems like the crown being constructed is missing a setback level from the original rendering, which to me anyway, makes it appear more awkward.

Buy-U-City
I hope you're right. Now that the crane is gone, I'm having doubts, unless they're laying cinder block or something similar for the transition up to the diamond.
KinkaidAlum
It's Randall Davis. Other than the Rice Conversion, none of his projects are great. The Renoir has a huge blank wall. The Cosmo's garage is offensive. The Gotham and the other thing on West Gray have gargoyles. Not sure why anyone thought this would be a masterpiece.
cloud713
yeah i couldn't tell you for sure, but i mean they are able to put up facade and what not without a crane. maybe that section is just a row of curtain wall panels?
HoustonIsHome
I wonder what people will be saying about RD's buildings. They seem to take Houston's randomness to a next level.

cloud713
It's starting to look more Titan than Astoria. Is that a bad thing?Btw, even with the haze we are having today, I could see the diamond while driving north on 288.
Montrose1100
Is that a bad thing?Btw, even with the haze we are having today, I could see the diamond while driving north on 288. Titan was more Jetsons, not a good or bad thing. The corner windows and the crown look very similar to the rendering we saw. Of course, the detailing will be different. cloud713
So it's got more of a futuristic vibe.. I guess that suits Randy's attempt at bringing Art Deco into the 21st century. I stayed at the Loews Miami and loved the hotel. Maybe I'm a fan of cheesy architecture..? Lol

The way the tower looks now just reminded me of the Titan rendering.

lockmat
So what will this new area filled with a cluster of towers on this side of Post Oak be called? Does it deserve its own name? NoPo? hahaha
Sellanious Caesar
So what will this new area filled with a cluster of towers on this side of Post Oak be called? Does it deserve its own name? NoPo? hahahaI personally always just thought Uptown had 2 parts, inside the Loop and outside the Loop. The Outer Loop Uptown calls itself "Galleria Area" locally. The Inner Loop Uptown doesn't have a local name yet, but I think River Oaks District would work great. If you can refer to an area by the name of a mall (eg. "Galleria Area") then you could also refer to an area for a street level shopping district too IMO.

richfish
I still can not for the life of me figure out what the heck they're doing finishing the facade 100 times in different shades of grey or white. It's looking now like the whole thing will be a hideous looking white monolith thing.

Montrose1100
You know what, after seeing this picture, I get now why we get cheesy Florida panhandle architecture. We are a city by the gulf, with a sub tropical climate. So really these type of bright beige and batman condo buildings are a product of our region. Houston is at such a crossroads. Anyways, just saying because I can now almost appreciate them.

Twinsanity02
Over 25 years ago a book was written tongue in cheek called the Nine Nations of North America. Houston was labeled a crossroad between three nations: The Breadbasket, Dixie, and Mex-America. Despite the jest there are elements of truth to this observation. This area is also considered a biological crossroad due to its assortment of eastern and western vegetation and being the upper northern boundary of tropical vegetation. This may partially explain the difficulty of giving our metro area a cute label. It may also explain our variety of, well, everything including architecture. Our topography may be boring, but very little else.
