Highrise Tower Posted April 6, 2019 Share Posted April 6, 2019 A new building planned for the Texas Medical Center will unite The Center for Hearing and Speech and Texas Children’s Hospital under one roof for more robust services to thousands more children with hearing loss. The center’s new 42,000-square-foot facility, slated to break ground this year and open in 2020 near State Highway 288 and South MacGregor Way, is expected to serve twice as many patients annually than the current campus on West Dallas. “A lot of our kids have other issues, so they end up going to Texas Children’s to get those issues addressed. It would be a lot easier on the families if we could locate closer or in the Texas Medical Center,” said Alan L. Smith, The Center for Hearing and Speech’s board chairman. Already, the center’s $22.5 million capital campaign has raised $7.5 million. Smith said the nonprofit plans to split the proceeds of the building sale with its co-occupant, The Harris Center. After vacating the structure this summer and factoring the cost of a temporary location, leaders estimate adding another $10 million to the fund. “By June, we will have at least $17.5 million, so we’ll have $5 million or less to go,” he said. Texas Children’s Hospital is a longtime member institution of the Texas Medical Center. The new facility, which will be located near State Highway 288 and MacGregor Way, will dramatically increase the number of children the organization can serve. “It’s really exciting that we will finally have a facility that starts to match the passion and expertise that we have within our walls right now,” said Kyle Swift, CEO of The Center for Hearing and Speech, who addressed the crowd assembled for the groundbreaking. “Today, a common goal brings us together. By taking part in making this a reality, you are helping us create a center of excellence that offers innovative services and support for children with hearing loss in decades to come.” In addition to the expansion, the new campus will also house medical professionals from Texas Children’s Hospital, including ear, nose, and throat physicians. This arrangement will streamline services and should increase both organizations’ reach for children in the community with hearing loss. The new facility is slated to open in the fall of 2020. A portion of the $22.5 million capital campaign raised for the new campus will go towards lab equipment, program expansion support and an endowment for building upkeep and maintenance. The Center for Hearing and Speech, which became a member of the Texas Medical Center in 2017, offers an audiology clinic, a speech-language pathology clinic, and education through the Melinda Webb School, which provides oral deaf education for children ages 18 months to six years. After becoming the 60th TMC member in 2017, the center executed a 50-year ground lease with the TMC for its new site near State Highway 288 and MacGregor Way. The organization also sold its former property at 3636 W. Dallas St. and moved into a temporary space at 1417 Houston Ave. The new 42,000-square-foot building broke ground in July. Fernanda Gratton, marketing and PR manager for the center, said that with this move — and the fundraising campaign that’s coming with it — the center wants to “double, double, double.” That means doubling the number of children served, doubling the size of the facilities and doubling the number of staff members. The center has three parts: an audiology clinic, a speech clinic and the Melinda Webb School, which serves children from 18 months to six years old. The clinics provide consultations for devices like cochlear implants to children with hearing loss and are staffed by speech pathologists and audiologists. The goal of the school, Gratton said, is that children can attend elementary school along with hearing students. All teachers at the school have master’s degrees and are auditory and verbal professionals. The building is being paid for by a $22.5 million capital campaign, which will include some funds for program expansion. The funds are being raised through donations and the cost of the center’s services. As of Oct. 16, the center has raised a little over $19 million. Houston-based Inventure Design is the architect, and the contractor is Houston-based Tellepsen. The new building will feature “a warm, compassionate” design, Gratton said, so it doesn’t give the cold, sterile appearance of a doctor’s office. It will also have new technology like sound booths.
