The Shops At Upper Kirby: Retail Center At 2715 Bissonnet St.

I thought there was already a thread about this, but I can't find one, so I will include all the information I know.

At 2715 Bissonnet in West U, diagonally across the street from the old Coca Cola bottling plant, there is a two-story shopping center from the 1960s or 1970s, which is being torn down for redevelopment.

Plans for redevelopment have been going on for a while; this flyer was posted in 2017 when a company called Edge was marketing it.

More recently, BPI realty has been marketing it, with the following rendering common to both flyers, showing a one-story strip mall:

And here is the site plan:

In November, the city of West University Place had a hearing to replat it.

The existing development is called The Upper Kirby Building, not to be confused with a building of the same name on Richmond, and other places have referred to it as the Shoppes at Upper Kirby and the Shops at West U, so I am uncertain of what the name of the final development will be.

Swamplot reported on the imminent demolition of the existing buildings, including this pre-demolition photo:

Here are some photos I took of it today during demolition:

Dirt work is finally almost done.  Over the last month, they excavated under where the foundation will be, filled in with new dirt, and hauled away the old dirt.  I'm guessing foundation work will start soon.  Photos taken this morning and Tuesday evening from bus 65:

Kinori Sushi.

This Kinori is from the UK, assume it's the same group.

This not a restaurant from the UK. It's a local restaurant from hospitality group Kinori Group.

There is a TABC notice posted at the Shops at Upper Kirby for a restaurant named Norigami. I don't know if this will be the brick-and-mortar location for pop-up restaurant Norigami or if it's something else.

CultureMap reported Norigami the pop-up restaurant is slated to open its permanent location in Bellaire. But 2715 Bissonnet isn't in Bellaire. So, I don't know.

Hopefully, we'll find out what's in store soon.

Just confirming popular sushi pop-up restaurant Norigami is opening their brick-and-mortar at the at the Shops at Upper Kirby.

Hopefully, local reporters covering the city's dining culture will have more details soon on the restaurant's forthcoming location at 2715 Bissonnet, Suite 160.

George's (George's Bistro & Bar) opened Monday at 2715 Bissonnet St, Suite 100. It's located in the Shops at Upper Kirby near the West U, SouthHampton, and Rice Village area.

The restaurant was labeled as the French Corner in leasing materials and in a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

According to their social media and website, the restaurant serves Continental cuisine.

First blurb about Norigami's brick-and-mortar restaurant debuting soon at the Shops at Upper Kirby. The restaurant is looking to open in November.

Norigami's address is 2715 Bissonnet, Ste 160. This isn't in Rice Village as reported by Eater Houston.

From Eater Houston today:

"Evolving from a monthly pop-up at Hidden Omakase, the reservations-only Norigami has now found a permanent home in Rice Village. The brick-and-mortar, which will offer a speakeasy entrance, is slated to offer its artfully made sushi and crowd pleasers like the Ménage à Foie Gras, a luxe combo of uni, toro, wagyu, caviar, and foie gras."

Houston Chronicle published an update on the estimated opening timeline for Norigami.

The pop-up restaurant is opening a brick-and-mortar location at 2715 Bissonnet, Ste 160. It will be located in the Shops at Upper Kirby.

Chef Cong Nguyen will lead this new speakeasy-style Japanese restaurant opening in January at 2715 Bissonnet. Expect a menu of hand rolls from this project that has been operating as a pop-up at Hidden Omakase.

Norigami is open to the public as of this week.  It's a Japanese restaurant from "Hidden Group, which owners Tuan and Thy Tran established with a Midas-like touch with the success of Hidden Omakase and Sushi by Hidden," according to Houston Chronicle.

As for the restaurant's layout and design, Houston Chronicle describes it as this:

"When customers enter Norigami, they’ll once again encounter a minimalist and industrial-like space with seating for 24 people at a U-shaped bar."

Additionally, "there is a discreet bar behind a wall with wood slats. This 24-seat lounge is called Hidden Bar and is designed in a speakeasy style — and is similar to how customers enter Sushi by Hidden behind a large piece of art."

Norigami is located at 2715 Bissonnet St, Suite 160. The restaurant joins George's in the retail center Shops at Upper Kirby.
