Why Doesn't Houston Have Many Movie Premiers?

I have noticed that nearly everytime a movie premiers in Hollywood, they also have a premier in New York and other cities like Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, etc, but never Houston. Why don't people see Houston as a place for things like this? I always thought of Houston as one of the more eliet cities in the USA but it doesn't seem that the rest of the nation feels that way.

Houston had the world premire of that space movie with Clint Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones.

And the Enron movie.

I have seen tons of premires in London. The hotel I frequent is in Leicester Square, and I have seen J. Lo, Richard Gere, Madonna, etc. You can watch all the action from your hotel room. People start lining up in the morning to get a spot.

Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and I shared an elevator ride earlier this year during the BAFTAS.

And I don't even watch movies.

Then how do you know it was Kurt and Goldie ? :D

So, citykid, would you come down from CS to stand around for a few hours to see a bunch of overpaid actors, doing a junkette for a movie they don't care about, in a town they care even less about ? If you want to see stars, just find out what movie might be filming around here, and then wait til later that night, and just go to one of our many Gentlemen's Clubs around the city, that is where they are hanging out, and you won't have to fight the crowds. :D:lol::D

More questions need to be asked like this.

Maybe what could help is if someone developed a movie theatre that was one of the best in the country luxury-wise (bigger and better than Edwards Cinema, because as nice as Edwards is, I think many big cities already have Edwards Cinema). It would have to be in a location that looked scenic and beautiful (downtown/bayou area, downtown park, Uptown beside the Galleria). And at the same time that it's developed, the owner worked a deal with the movie companies like Universal, Paramount, MGM, Disney, Pixar, etc to host at least 20 big premiers there a year between them. The theatre could also host independant film openings as well. Trust me, with great independant film openings there, many Hollywood directors and stars would want to come to Houston more to check it out.

Overpaid aside, movie premiers, the crowds waiting to see them, the cameras, and the "excitement" creates a buzz and positive media for the city hosting it.

Yo TJones, do you remember the opening of Planet Hollywood in Houston? Remember all the Houstonians that were outside the restaurant waiting to see Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallon just walk past them? Or do you remember when they were showing all the celebrity sightings at the bottom of the KHOU screen on the week of Super Bowl '04? It's cheesy, yes, but somehow that excitement and hype works.

Remember it ? I friggin worked there ! What a horrible experience. I apologize, I understand that there are certain people who get really really hyped over getting an autograph, or just shaking hands with a celebrity. I am one of those weirdos that just don't get jazzed about them. I totally see where a movie premiere would create a buzz, I will give you that. I guess I am just jaded. Autographs I would like to have gotten myself, Jordan on a basketball, Montana on a football. I know I can go out and buy these items, but you are right, it wouldn't be as thrilling. I have Nolan Ryan on a baseball. I can get Clemens for myself , if I ask the right people around me. I think that if you had a movie premiere every week though, the people of Houston would do what we always do and go ho-hum another premiere. We have the biggest fair-weather population of fan-base of any city in the world. I used to manage a couple of clubs around town back in the 90's. I have actually got to meet alot of sports celebrities and a few b-list stars, I don't know what all the attraction is. I just don't get all giddy inside !:lol::lol:

edit) jeeeeeeezzzz, I am re-reading this, and I sound like I have my nose pointed up to block out the sun. I am not trying to name drop, I am just speaking from experience. ;)

I feel the same way you do on celebrities. I've met quite a few myself, and yeah, didn't get gitty.

I feel you especially on having a premier every week not being much of an experience for Houstonians. I think one every two or three weeks would be best. But it would definately help H-Town on an international recognition basis.

I agree, have some would help the cities image. With the reaction that I have gotten from many of you Houstonians, I can tell that you guys like Houston boring. I know I will get a lot of reaction for saying that, but its the truth. Many of you guys don't want Houston to have any kind of attraction/entertanment, etc. Earlier today, I was talking to this woman from New Orleans who had came up to B/CS from Houston, I asked her how she liked Houston and she said it was completley boring. I asked her why she said there are know casinos, no major attractions, can't get liquor until a certin time on Sunday, etc. I couldn't argue because she was pretty much telling the truth, so I said why don't you try out Dallas? and she said I am tired of moving.

My point is, I am tired of seeing all of these big media events in other cities and not in Houston.

citykid, I really ought not waste my fingers even typing a reply, but I'm BORED.

First off, why did you lie to that poor woman from New Orleans? Dallas has no casinos, NO one in Texas can sell alcohol on Sunday, and Dallas has virtually the same attractions that Houston does.

Houston has had several movie premieres over the years. The reason you have not heard of them is because they are not the huge media and economic event that you think they are. Interesting that you think we are boring, coming from someone who lives in College Station. I might suggest that someone who thinks standing behind a rope watching overpaid actors arrive at a movie theatre is exciting, would be an absolute expert on BORING.

If you ever watch these premieres on TV, you'll see that they are attended by young people, mostly girls, and others who live vicariously through others. Since most of us on this board are neither of those groups, it is easy to understand why we couldn't care less about them.

As for what makes a city vibrant, it aint movie premieres. Even Los Angeles officials will tell you it is the movie INDUSTRY that they want, not the premieres.

I never said it was boring, she did.

Dallas has a theme park :D

I would rather have the movie industry than the premieres to, but something is better than nothing.

Actually, AFAIK, Edwards is only in Houston.

However it is a part of "Regal Entertainment", the largest movie theater group in the US. Regal Entertainment is a merger of Regal Theaters, United Artists, and Edwards.

Thanx for the correction. Is Edwards a perfect-type place for a movie premier?

That's funny, kid!

Oh...wait...you were serious? :o

Here's a little project for you. Wage a campaign to have movie premiers in CS. You could re-name it "Little Hollywood on the Prarie".

Sounds good, huh? And here's an added bonus: you could just STAY in CS or "Little H on the P"-as we'd like to call it. That way you wouldn't be bothering us by actually coming to Houston.

I think it's a win-win for all of us!

Probably posted for amusement but true words have never been spoken. I always wanted citykid09 to give up on Houston and start bugging Dallas since they are the booming ones. Citykid09, Houston sucks. Does that answer most of your questions now?

Oh yeah, a new quote to put in the what quote describes forumers here thread: "I asked someone in Bryan how do they like Houston and................"

Sorry Subdude and editor. I am just having a little fun.
