skooljunkie
Looks like the Admiral Linen facility (on 1.5+ blocks at Harvard/Center) is closing in January...just one block north of the new mixed use/H-E-B building at Buffalo Heights: https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2018/11/02/linen-and-uniform-rental-co-to-close-houston.html Quote Salt Lake City-based Alsco Inc. recently informed the Texas Workforce Commission that it will close a central Houston facility, affecting 145 employees. The facility is at 3520 Center St., according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter sent to the Texas Workforce. The job cuts will occur on Jan. 4.

skooljunkie
Heh, just realized another full block at 3300 Washington is part of this sale... https://research.catylist.com/api/images/data/og/media/user_uploads/5d24e01d42628b0001d8c0a2_Washington Avenue_3300.pdf That's a lot of large land tracts for sale in this immediate area. It's probably only a matter of time before HISD sells the old Harper School building at 3200 Center which is just the HISD construction office atm. I kind of wish someone would buy the main part of that campus for some kind of adaptive reuse. There's something about it I like.

s3mh
I wonder how much Admiral Linen is making on flipping the old recycling center. They just parked a few trucks on that lot over the past few years since they bought it from the city. That always seemed like an odd deal as it was pretty clear that it was just a matter of time until Admiral Linen relocated with property taxes soaring.

skooljunkie
Unrelated but adjacent, I noticed the narrow, triangular-shaped lot along the south side of Hicks St. (between Harvard and Studemont) is being platted for approximately 90 lots. I think one of the railroads owned this trainwreck of a lot.

I was riding on Hicks St. to take pics at the new Coop project and found this, looks like they are ripping out old rail line spur that ended near Harvard St. I wonder if something might being going up or just getting it ready to be sold.
hindesky
So Union Pacific railway continues to be ripped out by Hicks St. This line was no longer in use and was just like a parking rail, the main line is right next to it. I wonder if they are prepping this land to sell or going to repair the rail line for use? The ripped out section is from Studemont to Harvard St. I'm leaning toward them selling this thin slice of land. hindesky
Riding down Harvard St. between the 2 sections of cleared properties and I see this barrel of soil cuttings, 2 front end loaders a piles of asphalt and dirt. Talked with a worker from SER Construction closing the gate on the west side lot and he said a they were renting the property for storage while working on some road in the area, he pointed towards Heights Blvd. Tag on the barrel shows 3520 Center St which is the empty lot across the street and the generator of the cuttings shows "Alsco" which I think was Admiral Linen. Both lots still have "For Sale" signs. SER Construction web site shows they do civil work. http://serconstruction.net Edited September 11, 2021 by hindesky 1

hindesky
They are using the western lot to store the waste material and store equipment and new sewer and catch basins for the repaving project of Washington Ave.
hindesky
Now I'm not so sure if this lot is from the Washington Ave repaving job or from the Houston Endowment project. I originally thought the repaving job cause I saw new and old asphalt and lots of sewer and catch basins but the fact there is so much dirt makes me think Houston Endowment. I wish I could have asked someone. I also avoid going down that portion of Washington Ave cause they have it down to one lane. Can anyone confirm if they are removing a lot of dirt from Washington Ave?

Bucky
It will be interesting to see the fight that Portman has with the residents on 114 Heights to reclaim the alley that they have fenced in and claimed for their backyards. there is an alley there that looks to be developed into access to underground parking and parking spots. The residents don’t own the alley. It’s a public right of way.
