In around five years or less, a roughly 200,000-square-foot office complex and its accompanying retail development will be demolished and transformed into anything from a retail development, to a mixed-use development with creative office space, to a hospitality development.

Yorktown Plaza, comprised of two office buildings and a retail strip center near the Galleria, will either be sold to a developer or razed and redeveloped by Houston-based Wedge Group, the firm's CEO Greg Armstrongtold the Houston Business Journal. Wedge has owned those properties since 1996. Though redevelopment plans are still very open-ended, Armstrong said the property's 4.25-acre tract lends itself to an exciting redevelopment opportunity and said work would likely begin "sooner rather than later."

The property contains a 98,292-square-foot office building at 5353 West Alabama, a 97,045-square-foot building at 5373 West Alabama and roughly 13,000 square feet of retail space in-between those buildings.

That press release is hilarious.  "Sometime in the future we may be interested in doing something with this property. If anyone has any ideas or money, please get in touch."

Purchased by Braun Enterprises, renovations planned

https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2019/02/06/braun-enterprises-buys-another-galleria-area.html

Last May, Wedge Group CEO Greg Armstrong told the Houston Business Journal that the property either would be a developer or razed and redeveloped by Wedge. At the time, Armstrong said the property's 4.25-acre tract lends itself to an exciting redevelopment opportunity with ideas ranging from a retail development, to a mixed-use development with creative office space, to a hospitality development.

The Houston restaurant group involved with Moku Bar, Casian Asian, the Pho Spot, and Bird Haus have plans for an omakase concept at 53 West (5353 W Alabama St).

There were several posts in this thread last summer about the ground floor retail planned for 53 West, Braun Enterprises' renovation of Yorktown Plaza. I suspect the posts were deleted when every post and thread created by Crockpotandgravel were removed.

The posts included two updated site plans, a food hall from Company of Nomads (the group behind Conservatory, which was confirmed last week) and more.

One of the post showed Moku Bar on the site plan. I think Crockpotandgravel wrote of Moku Bar expanding here too (Please repost those if you can C&G). But that's not quite accurate.

The people behind Moku Bar will instead debut a new concept: Hidden Omakase.

Confirmation from Houston Chronicle regarding the food hall inclusion to 53 West, the former Yorktown Plaza undergoing renovations at 5353 West Alabama St in Houston's Galleria area.

CrockpotandGravel posted speculations of Company of Nomads (Conservatory, Bravery Chef Hall, Railway Heights Market) were possibly the operators of the food hall shown on the site plan. Both the posts and updated site plans from this summer were deleted when admins removed every post and thread from CrockpotandGravel -- a move that was petty and vindictive IMO, being that he provided a wealth of information, posted clear and large renderings, and made sure to include archive links when the original link become inactive.

"The first is a project called Conservatory 2, modeled on the original Conservatory, that will bring 11 food vendors and three bars into the Galleria neighborhood. The 12,000-square-foot site is the former Club Roxy space at 5351 W. Alabama. The target date for opening is September 2020. Mai and Ross said the company is already looking for vendors, who as in the original Conservatory, are smaller operations looking to start a new business without the risks and expenses of opening an independent brick and mortar restaurant."

  • The title was changed to 53 West: Mixed-Use Development At 5353 W. Alabama St.

Since there is no update about Conservatory's plans at 53 West, here is an article from last year detailing changes:

"Roveen Abante and Chase LoVullo (Pour Behavior) have partnered to become the franchisees and operators of the Conservatory food hall that will open in the former Roxy nightclub space."

"Plans call for 11 food vendors and three bars, including a mezzanine-level wine bar and a new rooftop patio that will connect to the building’s parking deck...After speaking to Conservatory co-owner Anh Mai about investing in the project, Abante and LoVullo tell CultureMap they saw an opportunity to become franchisees who could bring the concept to fruition more quickly than Mai and his partners could on their own."

I think Clutch City Tacos may be one possible food vendor / stall slated for Conservatory.

About a week and a half ago, Clutch City Tacos tagged Conservatory in one of its social media posts. The post didn't mention the food truck joining Conservatory's lineup. However, Clutch City Tacos is a regular feature at Spring Street Bar. The bar is owned by the team franchising the Galleria outpost of Conservatory.

Conservatory is located at 5353 W Alabama St, Ste 100. The food hall is one of several ground floor retail at 53 West.
