i_am_jim Posted November 28, 2012 Share Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) First Presbyterian Church of Houston Main @ Binz Organized March 31 (Easter Sunday), 1839, in Senate Chamber, Capitol of Republic of Texas, Main at Texas, by the Rev. Wm. Youel Allen, missionary from the United States, and eleven members. James Burke was elected ruling elder. Services of worship and a Sunday School (begun on May 13, 1838) continued in Capitol while church building was being erected on site (NW corner, Main and Capitol) given by the Allen family which had founded Houston. This church was the first house of worship completed in Houston. Dedicated on Feb. 13, 1842, it was used for meeting of other denominations and groups. Here the House of Representatives met in summer of 1842, and President Sam Houston addressed a joint session of Congress. Thus the congregation repaid the Republic's hospitality of 1838-1839. Original church burned 1862; a brick structure was built in 1867, and served until the erection of a large stone edifice, Main at McKinney, 1894. Fire destroyed part of that building in 1932. The present church was occupied in 1948 and dedicated Sept. 12, 1954. Through the years, this church body has furnished many outstanding leaders to the businesses and professions of state and nation. That’s why the Presbyterian School of Houston off Oakdale and Main is building a 46,000-square-foot space built up four stories rather than sprawling out, said Mark Carleton, school headmaster. Instead of a boxy structure, Carleton describes the new $18 million elementary school as more of a building splayed open, one with a lot of glass that brings in natural light and mirrors the aesthetic of the nearby Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Flexible learning spaces will be prominent throughout the building. The new school will open by fall 2019. San Francisco-based architecture firm Gensler designed the building while Houston-based W.S Bellows Construction Corp. is the contractor. It’s the first expansion in 15 years for the school for children ages 3 to eighth grade. Currently, the 575 students learn in classrooms within the First Presbyterian Church. Whats crazy is that their website says this big building is only for Pk3, Pk4, and Kindergarten. It might also be for k-5 too, but doesn't seem clear because of how they named it. With that size, I feel like they are going after all the kids of the people who are in Museum District/East Downtown/Third Ward. (I don't know where on the website you saw that it only includes Pk3, Pk4, and K; the full list is on the website in several places. ) Early Childhood and Lower School Building seems to describe it pretty well. Posted June 24, 2019 Share Posted June 24, 2019 Apologies, the place just seems huge, especially for someone who’s elementary school in South Houston was basically a string of outdoor T-building. That’s pretty cool that it’s for Pk3-5th grade. Those kids will have a special, and very pretty place to learn.
