Yesterday, Kraftsmen announced its closing its cafe and bakery located in the Heights Clock Tower at 611 W 22nd St.  

The announcement shared on social media:

"Scott Tycer, the founder and owner of Kraftsmen Baking & Café, has announced that Kraftsmen will cease the full-service menu at the Heights café location on Sunday, March 12, 2023 as the lease is expiring. We will continue to serve our artisan breads to both retail customers and our wholesale accounts, and will share plans for our new location in the near future. We will continue selling limited menu items through May while focusing on the wholesale business. There will be no changes on the wholesale side of the business. The retail bakery store will remain open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May with sales of breads, pastries, and other baked goods."

Landlords are killing the Heights.  Tea Sip on 19th is closing because of rent increases.  Same for Hugs and Donuts.  Unless an independent business is backed by some big bucks and is going to do massive business like Squable, etc., it is pretty much a given than only chains will be able to afford commercial restaurant/retail space in the Heights.  Best evidence of that is the renovated shops on the south side of 19th next to Boomtown and the cigar store.  Their big tenant is HR Block.

CultureMap reports on Kraftsmen's closure at 611 W 22nd St, Suite 1A. The cafe and bakery is located in the Heights Clock Tower / Heights Clocktower.

"A popular Heights cafe will soon serve its last meals. Kraftsmen Baking & Café will cease restaurant operations this Sunday, March 12, owner Scott Tycer announced.

The cafe opened in 2010 in the space that had been utilized by Textile, Tycer’s pioneering tasting menu restaurant."

"...The closure comes as Kraftsmen prepares to leave its longtime home on W 22nd St. for a new facility that’s expected to open this summer in a location that will be announced at a later date. Until the move occurs, the bakery will maintain its wholesale operations and a small retail presence that sells breads, pastries, and other baked goods."

Kraftsmen is opening a facility in EaDo, as noted in the 2910 McKinney St topic last fall. I'm not entirely certain if the new location at 2910 McKinney Street, Suite 400 will be a manufacturing facility / commissary kitchen or a new bakery and cafe location. Building permits lists a buildout for a manufacturing space & warehouse.

The language on the filing is a little confusing. I can't make out if this will be Kraftsman's manufacturing facility / commissary kitchen or a new bakery and cafe location:

"Second generation interior remodel on the first floor of an existing 1-story commercial building located at 2910 McKinney Street, Houston, TX. 77003."

The unit is 17,340 sq ft.

I was sent a post from a Facebook group yesterday pertaining to Heights Clock Tower at 611 W 22nd St.  The post asked about the status of Kraftsmen's impending closure. Someone tied to Underbelly Hospitality wrote: "Something better is coming but it will be awhile.. stay tuned."

I don't know if the comment is alluding to a new Underbelly Hospitality restaurant concept or not.

This is great news! Dandelion / Dandelion Cafe has been on the hunt for a second location for a little over a year now.  The cafe was eyeing Spring Branch but the property failed through. 

Dandelion will be a great addition to the Heights. I know many are mourning Kraftsmen's move from the neighborhood, but I think Dandelion will win them over. Their location in Bellaire has a loyal following.

I'm looking forward to Dandelion's expansion to 611 W 22nd St, Suite 1A. The Heights Clock Tower is a wonderful location.

The Heights has lost a lot of good breakfast locations (Down House, Morning Star, Hugs and Donuts, Kraftsmen etc.).  So, this will be good.  But the Heights is now becoming almost exclusively a place for nation or regional chains/franchises or second or third locations for local restaurants.  Only high dollar chef driven places like Jun, Savoir and Squable are bucking the trend.

No clue. There are no pulled building permits for 2215 Lawrence St either. Also, there isn't anything pertaining to 2215 Lawrence St in the latest leasing materials for Heights Clock Tower / Heights Clocktower.

Radom Capital uploaded new leasing materials for Heights Clocktower / Heights Clock Tower. The building is located at 611 W 22nd St. According to the LoopNet listing, the brochure was uploaded or updated this month.

In the latest brochure, Radom Capital mentions renovations for the alleyway. Below is the text from the brochure:

A plan review fee permit was filed yesterday for 2215 Lawrence St, A.

According to the permit, the use is for a conversion and build out. Urban Genesis is the listed occupant.

T & L Designs is the listed buyer of the permit.

Building permits were issued yesterday for 611 W 22nd St, Suite 100 and 611 W 22nd, Suite 105.  Additionally, certificate of occupancy permits were issued to the aforementioned suites.

According to the permits, it's for a 5,581 sf convert bakery to office at Heights Clock Tower / Heights Clocktower.

  • Structural permit
  • Certificate of compliance



Details from the permit:

  • Restaurant demo int non-load-bearing non-fire-rated walls
  • FCC Group: Non-residential alteration


The permits are for the remodel of Dandelion Cafe's forthcoming Heights location. It's leasing Kraftsmen Baking's former space at Heights Clocktower / Heights Clock Tower.
