KATY (Covering Katy) – Katy Christian Ministries’ community garden, a garden that provides produce for KCM’s food pantry, has been in operation since 2009 and is now in its first phase of relocating to a new site. The move will take place March 11 at 9 a.m., and volunteers are needed to assist with the move to Faith West Academy, 2225 Porter Road.

“We are very humbled and thankful to DRG Holdings LLC and IMAGE Custom Engineering Solutions LLC for allowing us to keep the garden, rent-free, for the last two years,” said Deysi Crespo, KCM executive director.

“This partnership is a blessing and a great opportunity for our students, KCM’s volunteers and the families they serve,” said Kirk Rightmire, Faith West Academy’s public relations director. “We are thrilled to provide this piece of land for KCM’s garden, and what a perfect timing to make this possible.”

In 2015, the food pantry distributed 1,425 pounds of produce from the garden, and in 2016 it distributed a total of 3,253 pounds.

“The difference in garden yield between 2015 and 2016 speaks volumes about the love and care poured into the community garden by KCM volunteers,” said Pastor Jon Davis from The Church at Cane Island. Davis was involved in the original construction of the garden back in 2009, and is now the appointed project leader for this relocation, to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

“The KCM community garden is truly a gift of love no matter how you look at it,” said Crespo. “Through its harvest, we get to see God’s creative beauty. Through our volunteers’ hard work and dedication, we get to see the labor of love, and through our church’s involvement, we feel unity and commitment to serve, together.”

KCM is urgently seeking volunteers ages 14 and older to assist with the relocation on March 11. Contact Katy Christian Ministries’ volunteer coordinator Kristina Albright at Kristina.Albright@ktcm.org or at 281-391-5261 ext. 4022 for details and to sign up. Trucks and trailers are also needed to help move materials to the new site.
