There is a contemporary furniture store just south of the Louis Shank's on Fondren called Spazzz... or something similar. I think the cross street is Clarkcrest.

As well as Cantoni and Pilie'.

Hi Dream,

Retropolitan is owned by a friend of ours & we consign some of our pieces there. We do have inventory beyond the ebay store...at Retropolitan, our loft & in our storage. Working on setting up a retail/showroom of our own right now, but we're happy to hook you up in the meantime...feel free to email me with more specifics about what you're looking for...the more details the better. robyn@arouty.com

Houston does have a few good places other than the places mentioned, which I like as well.

-Mid Century Modern is on Westheimer near Hazard. They have authentic mid century pieces like Le Corbusier, Eames, Mies, etc... BUT they have authentic mid century pricing too. Worth it in my opinion.

-Roche Bobois has some nice stuff. From in-you-face modern to subtle modern. Most of their stuff is on the pricier side. San Felipe between 610 and Post Oak Blvd.

-West Elm is new to Houston. They are a spin off of Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn, but with a moden edge. This place has really great prices. Westheimer in Highland Village, www.westelm.com

-My personal favorite is not in Houston, however I love everything they have. It is a store called Room & Board. They have Hermann Miller copies of all of the prominent early and mid century designers and new designs as well. I could devote a day to looking at their chairs, sofas, and lamps! www.roomandboard.com

-Don't laugh...but Target (soon). Thomas O'Brien, a big name in New York's SoHo, has a new line coming out in October called Vintage Modern. Really cool stuff, extremely affordable and definately better than Ikea.

Sorry, I missed this post earlier. I don't think anyone mentioned Sunset Settings.

http://www.sunsetsettings.com/index.htm

This is the place to get all the high priced new stuff. It's an amazing store. It's a bit like DWR (1956 West Gray), but it has more of the classics (Knoll too, not just Miller) so you can compare the feel of the different furniture.

I, however, prefer the vintage stuff so for me Metro Modern on Milam is the place to go. They don't have the hugest inventory (as they are constantly turning it over!), but Travis and Karen will keep an eye out for you and make suggestions. They seem to know a lot of people, so if they don't have it they might find someone who does. They have also won me over on several pieces that weren't "big brand" pieces but were very cool anyway and fit right into our decor. Finally, they are more than accomodating with delivery as well and I've never felt like I paid too much, which has led me to buying more...

I stopped by Retropolitan Ballroom this past Saturday and they aren't open on weekends anymore, but if you call the number on the sign inside the door, the woman (can't remember her name but very friendly) will schedule a time to meet you at the store. Seemed very willing to accomodate my schedule. PS - her voice mail refers to something that is not at all related to furniture, but leave a message anyway - you are calling the right number.
