Windows 10

Recommended Posts

What are your views on Windows 10? Do you think that it is better than Windows 8 or is it just basically the same thing? I just got a laptop with Windows 10 and I don't know that it justifies all of the hype around it. What do you think?

Windows10 is better than Windows8 - it's essentially a large upgrade on Windows8 so it isn't terribly different, but the differences are welcomed - the revamped Start menu in particular.  We skipped Windows8 at my company and will be going to Windows10 (eventually)

Better than 8 but not any better than 7 unless you need touch screen capability. I have 10 on my portable laptop but 7 still on my home PC. I'm getting more use to 10 and perhaps will prefer it some day. Probably when Windows 12 comes out.

I guess it comes down to personal preference and a bit of conditioning. I think I'm just too used of the previous versions of Windows, and so anything new is not very welcome at first. I'm getting used to the few changes that there are though.

I got my new laptop that came with Windows 10 a couple of months ago and it's so different from the one I was using Windows 7. On top of that the search browser, Edge is not easy to use at all, and I don't know how to customize it. So frustrating.

Internet Explorer is still available - although it is sort of hidden.  Hit the Windows key, then start typing "Internet" -- it will find Internet Explorer for you - once you start it, right-click the Internet Explorer icon in the task bar and "Pin" to the task bar so you can find it easily.  You can also set it as your default browser (it should ask you if you want to do that when you start it) so EDGE won't be default.

I use Chrome also but Opera is still my favorite. Amazing it's still around. Works well on my phone also.

I'm usually OK with Windows 10, but two minor gripes:  it updates frequently so constant rebooting is necessary, and the little notification feature goes off frequently enough to get really annoying.

I'm not a fan of the way Win10 handles updates either, particularly the fact that you're only able to defer them for a set period of time before you're forced to accept them. I understand why MS is doing this, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

That said, so long as you take time to fully understand the privacy settings, there's a lot to recommend Win10. IMO, the most interesting new feature (as of the recent Anniversary Update), albeit one that will only appeal to those who've had some experience with a Unix/Linux command line environment:

I know what you mean about the updates, Subdude. I actually set mine to not auto-update because it was getting really monotonous. I don't know if this will cause any problems or not, but I was tired of the never-ending updates.

I think Windows 10 is great. There is a bit of a learning curve to it but once you get the hang of it you'll love it. I read an article on How-to-geek detailing all the tips and tricks on how to get the most use out of it.

I didn't know I had a choice about the updates. Great! Now I don't have to put up with the constant upgrading and never-ending configurations. Thanks for sharing that.
