hindesky
Seems to be going really slowly but I guess since the contractor is dealing a city/state government funding it may take a while. bobruss
Thanks to beerNut I found this thread. As I was mentioning on another thread this thing is close to topping out and its nice to see a steel structure for a change instead of reinforced concrete. I remember back in the big building boom in the late 70's early eighties there were several skyscrapers that went up built out of steel, including the 70 story Wells Fargo building. Something about steel construction always seemed more interesting, at least to me.

zaphod
It all looks very slick, especially the residential portion. por favor gracias
Man, those views from the top of this place are awesome, and the few gaps between skylines that are left will be filled in and extended nicely over the next few years. A decade or two from now, this view could very well show an uninterrupted skyline for almost 180 degrees from this roof.

wilcal
FYI: this is supposedly to be completed in December and it looks like they might get it done! Midtown Houston / CCPPI just announced in the blog that they would be building an additional 24 affordable homes. Not sure how new that info is. hindesky
Dowling St. doesn't exist any more, it is now called Emancipation Ave. and it has been for several years now. Time to change that name on this.

Do property owners get to decide what the street is named? The name was removed because it was named after a losing officer from the conquered confederate army. The confederacy lost the war to hold slaves and this is a largely black neighborhood, I think they should have a choice in the name of their streets vs. some racists rednecks from the suburbs. Since when do losers get to have stuff named after them? Edited October 26, 2020 by hindesky 5
cspwal
According to the city, there's two ways to change a street name - either a citizen petition with 75% of the property owners on the street, or by city council passing an ordinance after notifying the owners. Notably, the council don't need to get consent from the owners; the check on it is public pressure on council members to vote against it if it is too out there https://www.houstontx.gov/planning/Forms/devregs/StreetNameChangeProcedures-Standards.pdf Edited October 26, 2020 by cspwal

I don't care, I'm just mentioning on how the city does whatever it wants anyways in the end.

august948
Are they planning to and/or did they consider renaming Tuam street, also? Below is the entry from wikipedia. Apparently, Tuam was named at the same time in 1892 for Dowling's place of birth in Ireland. Quote Dowling Street (1892) In 1892, the Houston City Council renamed East Broadway to Dowling Street.[13] On 11 January 2017, Houston City Council approved a plan to rename Dowling Street to Emancipation Avenue.[14] Tuam Street (1892) In 1892, the Houston City Council renamed a street, which is perpendicular to Dowling Street (now Emancipation Avenue), to Tuam Street, the namesake of Dowling's birthplace Tuam, Ireland. Texasota
That's also a much less direct connection. Tuam still exists, and has likely produced dozens of non-racists over the years.
