samagon
Does anyone remember sims over on westheimer just outside the beltway? Where should a person go for this kind of experience these days?

JLWM8609
I remember Syms. There were good deals to be had. I think they maybe still would've been around had they not decided to acquire Filene's Basement. You may want to try Nordstrom Rack.
UtterlyUrban
Syms had nice deals on boxy tradition suits. As a younger man needing to wear a suit every day to work, I relied on that chain heavily. They made their money on the alterations which I remember being foolishly expensive. Combine an Independent tailor and Syms purchase and a young man could look good for the office and save a bunch of money (ties and shirts too).Anyway, try steinmart or even Men's warehouse. They will have low prices. Also consider Suitsupply (online and a retail store on westheimer). They will be more expensive (but still "affordable" --- not "very inexpensive" though) but will have a suit that is less boxy and a much more "modern" (I.e. A throwback to 1967) cut. Suitsupply has nice quality too -- many suitcoats will be full canvas or half canvas rather than fused.

Fringe
It's been so long I can't remember the name but I have had luck in the past finding great deals for suits over off Harwin near Hillcroft. Luckily a suit lasts me about 10 years, which was probably the last time I purchased one.
BeerNut
Not trying to hijack. Can anyone recommend a good tailor?
samagon
I used to go to a place on memorial city way (can't remember the name), they were very reasonable on price, and did good work. It's been since before syms was gone that I had gone though.

samagon
I ended up at suit supply. Was a bit more than I really wanted to spend, but it looks nice, so there's that.
