There was a notice put out that Mayor Parker would be speaking at Washington Terrace Civic meeting this Wednesday, concerning development on that piece of land. I noticed a bit of grumbling and lots of rumors about this development from residents Does anyone know any details?

Is this part of Midtown TIRZ meeting it's requirement to build affordable housing?

I am part of a non-profit group that has pledged to contribute to this center's capitol campaign. My understanding is that the land was acquired through a city grant.

The building will house low-income LGBT seniors, and not everyone in the neighborhood is happy about it, but I'm glad to see it moving forward.

The property, at 2222 Cleburne, is about a mile and a half east of the Center in the historic Third Ward. The finished facility will feature 112 one- and two-bedroom independent-living apartments spread out across two interconnecting four-story buildings. At the ground level, the complex will include parking spaces, a dog park, a gardening area, a water feature, courtyards, and a shade structure. A privacy fence will enclose the complex.

The Hollyfield Foundation, the Brown Foundation, and The LTR Lewis Cloverdale Foundation have generously anchored the capital campaign. But in order to qualify for the Midtown land contribution, the capital campaign must still raise $1 million by December 31, 2016.

Once that amount is raised, the final architectural plans can be prepared. Organizers are hoping for a fall 2017 groundbreaking and a summer 2018 grand opening of the facility.

The Montrose Center recently reached its fundraising goal for a new senior housing facility focused on the LGBTQ community, which will soon get underway.

The project will be the first of its kind in Texas and throughout the South, according to the center’s website.

The LTR Lewis Cloverdale Foundation Inc. provided a $750,000 lead gift for the fundraising effort earlier this year, allowing the center to exceed its goal, according to a March press release. The Montrose Center will name one of the three buildings on the property in honor of the gift. The senior community center building will be named after Robert “Bob” Reeves Lewis, an LGBT community leader whose bequest started the LTR Lewis Cloverdale Foundation.

The Montrose Center had to secure $2.5 million in order to receive a 2.87-acre lot as an in-kind donation from the Midtown Redevelopment Authority. The lot, valued at nearly $3.27 million, is at 2222 Cleburne St.

Construction is expected to start early next year, KTRK ABC13 reports. While open to all, the facility specifically will accommodate LGBTQ seniors, ABC13 reports

Ground breaking will be Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 10:30am - 11:30am

FromThe Montrose Center:

The Montrose Center is excited to announce the groundbreaking of its affordable senior independent living center!

This complex will embrace the LGBTQ and Third Ward communities. The “There’s No Place Like Home” campaign, led by honorary campaign co-chairs, Mayor Annise Parker and State Rep. Garnet Coleman, has hit the final financial milestone in order to break ground.

The complex, designed by Smith & Company Architects, will feature 112 one- and two-bedroom independent living apartments for low-income seniors ages 62 and older. Eligible seniors will pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent. Additional features of the property will include a social services department managed by the Center, geriatric primary care clinic provided by Legacy Community Health, a group dining area, meeting and game rooms, fitness center, a dog park, a vegetable garden, and outdoor recreational spaces.

Housing is one of the greatest financial challenges, and correspondingly, one of the greatest needs for older adults across the nation. The groundbreaking event will also honor and thank Mayor Parker and Representative Coleman for their vision and work to launch the senior living center.

This project presents a unique opportunity for the LGBTQ community and its allies to come together to ensure that LGBTQ and Third Ward seniors can age in a safe and affirming environment, with dignity, independence and a sense of community.

On June 20, the Montrose Center finalized the necessary funding to start construction. In addition to receiving $13.8 million in federal subsidies, it was also granted $5.1 million in Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones (TIRZ) funding from the City of Houston’s Department of Housing & Community Development, and a land donation valued at over $5 million.
