The Whitehall, at 1700 Smith St., previously was known as the Crowne Plaza Houston Downtown, but it relaunched in April under its historic name after undergoing a $5 million renovation. The renovation also included renaming the hotel’s on-site restaurant as Edgar’s Hermano and creating a casual bistro called Buffalo Bayou Coffee.

Nate99
Surprised Ragin Cajun didn't make it. They pre-dated the boom, so I would have thought that they would be ok with what's available. Maybe the lease was up and they didn't want to bother with it anymore. Cajun food without significant beer sales just sounds odd in any case, they probably felt better off redeploying their efforts elsewhere. Houston19514
After reading a recent thread on this forum, one could be excused for coming away with the idea that it might be hard to find a bite to eat in downtown Houston on the weekends. Always eager to find the facts, I did some digging around and came up with a list of 110 restaurants, cafes, etc, where one can eat on Saturday and Sundays. An additional 41, for a total of 151, are open on Saturdays. And more are on the way!

102IAHexpress
Samurai Noodle Closed Ragin' Cajun Closed Oxheart Closed Am I missing any other restaurants that have closed in downtown this year? How is Roma Pizza doing on the light rail line? Still closed on Sundays? Odd, I guess people don't eat pizza on Sundays.
towerjunkie
^ Ragin' Cajun was in a tunnel. What does a subterranean tunnel restaurant open for limited hours of the day, limited days of the week, and for a limited amount of people have to do with a light rail line? Idk. If anything its great they closed, maybe in the future they'll consider opening elsewhere in a more visible location that isn't closed after 6:30 pm. Oxheart closed but not because of some nonsense: "oh how lamentable Houston, closing fine restaurants due to a lack of competence in public transport" your trying to spin here. The owner is revamping the entire place into a new concept. Samurai Noodle is, like your presence on this forum, irrelevant. Roma Pizza is closed on Sunday, yet is open Thursday-Saturdays until 3AM. Why you didn't acknowledge that I don't know. You know what else is closed on Sunday? Chick-Fil-A, didn't see you complain about the Chick-Fil-A in Pennzoil Place being closed all the way from your homely Chicago. Its not always about electric trains and how they have swindled an entire city out of millions by advocating false assumptions and promises of bringing thousands of commuters and development into town. Maybe the employee's/management need a break from long late hours, maybe they need Jesus. Edited June 29, 2017 by towerjunkie

rechlin
Samurai Noodle doesn't count. It's in the Conservatory, where three of the food vendor spots are temporary locations for different places to rotate in and out, and that's been the plan since day 1. Samurai Noodle and the Greek place next to it were both swapped out already; I'm not sure what the schedule is for the Tex-Mex/barbecue place is to be swapped out, but I'm guessing it will be soon since it's been there over a year. Only Melange Creperie is intended to be there long-term.

If you want food Downtown on the the weekend, it's not hard to find. Just venture around Market Square, North End or now around Disco Green. Rather, I would revise that and say that "it is near impossible to miss".

If someone was standing at the bottom of Smith Street behind the Leland Federal Building and walked for literally 3/4 of a mile north on Smith street up to Rusk Street behind the Bank of America building on a Sunday, does that person come across even one open street level restaurant on Smith street for that stretch? It would be near impossible for that person to find a restaurant on that stretch of Smith open on a Sunday.
