The 23,505-square-foot building will be located in a prime location downtown, at Washington Avenue and Franklin Street at the entrance of the Central Business District. It will include a three-story atrium and an open-air top-floor balcony with views of downtown. It will also feature a color-changing three-story wall.

Hmmm, according to the article this is going in the triangle where preston/franklin breaks off from washington. not sure I completely understand how its sited from this one rendering though.

Same Here. I can't figure out where this is. Here is my best guess:

Ha! They might have some trouble getting permits for that location.

I think it's actually at the triangle where Preston meets Washington just north of Buffalo Bayou and I45.

did you just recommend big brothers big sisters spend more money on "something architectural"?

Sure did.  This is their HQ for this area.  Do something nice, or just rent a space in a retail strip center and forgo the money needed to build their own building, buy property etc.  That would be cheaper than building new.

I'm not advocating they spend $300,000 on design + implementation of something, but do a little something.   I know the have a tight budget - non-profits always do.  There is still the chance to build something meaningful while also staying within a budget.

Good to infill that area.  The design of this building is...........very non-profit like.  Too bad they couldn't have spent a little more money on something architectural.

I don't think money is necessarily required for nice architecture. Do architects charge for creativity?you don't always need expensive materials. That's just my opinion.

Caution-Fun-Ahead.png

this proposed edifice as per big brothers and big sisters, is indeed a wonderful and fun concept.

for their mission ahead, this concept shall be very user friendly.  a very modern approach, that shall make all patrons feel welcome.  i am most certain that BBBS, has hereby

positioned a lot of pre-planning into this particular building, and they understand just what shall work for them as per their immediate construction budget.

i am just not comprehending the angst here.  bravo, big brothers and big sister of houston!

serious fun ahead....

You realize bury is an engineering firm and not an architecture firm, right? FYI they were also involved in the Wesleyan tower, Kirby grove and a ton of other developments that they of course did NOT design.

Yes of course I realize that, I'm not an idiot. I have other reasons to hate that POS company and the asshole behind it.

Vomit inducing x.x But It could have been much worse. I agree with arche_757 I wish clients would spend the hard earned cash to go the extra mile. I mean that building is going to be your building for the next 15-30 years and its not just you that has to live with it but everyone! Not many realize this and clients always instead of sitting and thinking about it just go with the easiest answer. You can get amazing architecture on a budget too. I was recently at the spotlight lecture by RDA and the firm that was recognized was 5468796. All the projects were on a budget and looked awesome! Then again we as a practice have a hard time selling this aspect :/ I think its getting better, but still a long way to go and until Architects are once again back on top as true advisers in this field you will still get results like this.

So let me restate again. Vomit inducing in terms of caliber (and yuck that yellow >.<), but decent in terms of the building itself. Not bad. Lets move on and continue to improve.

Big Brothers Big Sisters will break ground on its new local headquarters near downtown Houston on May 25.

The groundbreaking ceremony, which starts at 1 p.m., will also launch the final phase of fundraising for the 21,000-square-foot building, at 1003 Washington Ave. just north of downtown. So far, more than 60 percent of the funds needed have been raised.

There were a lot of tears and laughter at the grand opening celebration of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston's new building.

The event was held Feb. 21 on the ground floor of the new $8.4 million structure at 1003 Washington Ave. The 21,000-square-foot building nearly doubles the amount of space the organization previously occupied.

Some nice photos were taken of this project for ArchDaily:

Thought I was going to find this in the "Downtown" sub since this is complete, but apparently its still in "Going Up". Didn't mean to bump this in Going Up.

@Urbannizer @Triton @Subdude @ekdrm2d1

Could one of y'all move this to the "Downtown" sub since this is complete. Thanks!
