I didn't realize until now that it looks like they are removing the Memorial street connection.

I hope they also improve the left turn going on to the W Memorial Look Dr. There is a major backup of traffic there because the lights aren't synced so only about 5 cars are able to wait in the median.

looks to me like there's a complete re alignment and a traffic circle.

i would be checking it out on my bike but my bike was stolen from my condo's supposedly very secure garage last week (my supposedly very secure lock was cut as well...oy!)...🚳

so yeah...thanks in advance everyone for holding a fundraiser car wash as soon as the weather gets better 🤪

I guess let me clarify, there is still a connection there but it looks more like a lane to get you to the parking area as opposed to a direct road as it is now which sort of surprised me. I hadn't noticed that before.

it's still there, it still sucks balls, and it's been made worse by the lanes being cut down to two.

The solution to the problem is having a small median there so traffic turning left doesn't have to go through two lights.

Yea, there really needs to be a better solution here. Would have been cool if they made a small tunnel under the other side of Memorial for the left turn lane to go under or something.

Speaking of, I have not heard anything about them building the bike loop in the west part of the park (right next to the highlighted portion of memorial dr). I know that the picnic loop will be going away as part of their whole re-do with the land bridge (replaced with more walking/MTB trails). Sounds like the park will be without a dedicated biking area for at least a few years if they havent' even announced things :(

I would presume they had done the traffic studies and decided the number of people taking Memorial was a small enough number.

or maybe the people who live on Memorial on the other side of 610 didn't like it being used as a through road so lobbied for the designers to insert the traffic circle to divert most of the traffic to Woodway.

either way, I presume that Woodway can handle the traffic.

Sorry to hear that.  Few things suck worse than having your bike stolen.

I took a walk in the park on Sunday at dusk. The walls of the outdoor rooms had gone to seed and berry. The swamp was moist.  The families sitting on blankets and individuals walking the planks seems at peace. To the landscape architects who repurposed and replanted for the public's use and enjoyment , kudos.

There have been a lot of wildlife crossings before Tulsa. Here's a sampling.

Lots of these in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.  In some places, they're required because of endangered species laws.

Notwithstanding the multiple responses implying something to the contrary, your post remains ACCURATE.  Funny how that works.

Congratulations, Tulsa! Even if Houston did “take it from Tulsa,” so to speak, it would be the latest on a relatively long list, and I, for one, would rather be Houston.

The tunnels built for Memorial Park's Land Bridge are scheduled to open this spring to traffic.

Runners with the Chevron Houston Marathon will get a sneak peek this Sunday, January 16. Eyewitness News learned the south tunnel will be used as part of the race.

Kudos to the construction team for the timing, that's a really cool way to christen the tunnels. Probably going to be some neat press photos of the runners going through as well.

I walked almost daily at Memorial Park over the Holidays. I was a bit worried that it would be over programmed but man, did they knock it out of the park! Everything is looking so nice. Next step, tunnel Interstate Ten!

this is exciting stuff, any idea when they'll open the bridge to public? I presume they've still got to move a lot of dirt, and then landscape.

I think end of year is the target for the land bridge to be open.

I do remember you! You probably saw me hobbling along at that point in the race. Did something to my foot and could barely put weight on it but I finished!

Wait, isn't that only like the halfway point? You could barely put weight on it for the next 10+ miles? I woulda gave up so fast.

sorry, I guess I wasn't clear, I understood that part of it about the tunnels, but nothing was mentioned when the park area above the tunnels would be open. I think someone else already gave the answer though.

yes, it will be cool to drive through the park and not have to divert for the construction, but it will be cooler when I can park and walk over the land bridge.

It was right after Mile 14 but yeahhhh...really not the best decision. I could walk though and was able to run some after it but I basically walked the last 10-12 miles. It was my first marathon and I was too stubborn to give up.

Well congrats! I can barely run a mile. I'm just working up to a 5k so props to a full marathon.

@BigFootsSocks If you spot yourself in the video let us know! Congratulations on finishing!

It's an amazing site however I feel that there will be morons who will want to be artistic on the inside of the tunnel. There are too many hard working people working on this fine project.

Don't expect any improvements to the picnic loop -- I believe it is due to be replaced with a more natural area and more trails (Bayou wilds section)

As someone who bikes in the picnic loop regularly this is pretty sad, it's one of the few car free spots to go bike at night (the lights make it a lot less sketchy than some of the bayou trails) -- the master plan mentions a new bike trail over on the west side of the park, but I have yet to hear any mention of that being built.

From the document linked above:  "The master plan proposed an improved trail network that addresses serious safety and maintenance issues in the existing trail system. The plan proposes several solutions. First, an extensive multi-use trail system connects to major roads and surrounding neighborhoods outside the park as well as to all major use areas of the park.

"The plan also separates the many trail users on the site into different areas of the park connected by this multi-use trail network. The Seymour Lieberman trail is expanded to 3 miles. A cycle loop is added in the northwest portion of the park to accommodate cyclists who currently use the picnic loop. A quarter mile timing track is introduced next to the existing trails center. The current system of natural surface mountain biking trails are improved and expanded, while pedestrian trails are provided in the more sensitive areas in the Old Archery Range, the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, and proximate to the bayou on the south side of the park and in Hogg Bird Sanctuary."

Yeah this is mentioned in the 10 year plan but there is no details yet on construction timeline. I worry the picnic loop will be demolished and then it will be years before the new cycle loop is built.

The proposal looks way better than the picnic loop -- especially for the weeknight bike races that used to happen at MP. Def saw someone break their leg crashing into one of those wooden stumps around the edge of the road :(
