Comparing Houston to Copenhagen

Houston Tomorrow invites you to a small gathering of Houston region leaders for a personal conversation with Michael Emerson, PhD, Academic Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research and Professor at Rice University. Dr. Emerson has recently returned to Houston after a year-long research sabbatical in Copenhagen. He was there to conduct the Copenhagen Area Survey, study their transportation and social systems, and is currently writing a book comparing Houston and Copenhagen. His opening remarks will focus on transportation, but the discussion can then branch out to what makes for life satisfaction in Copenhagen, and what lessons might be learned for Houston.

The concept for Ask the Expert Breakfast events is to create an intimate dialogue so that attendees may discuss and ask questions about Houston's future with experts such as Dr. Emerson.

A little description of whose sponsoring the event- garnered from its website:

Houston Tomorrow, formerly the Gulf Coast Institute, is a 501©(3) charitable nonprofit organization founded in 1998 to explore urban issues and to inform the discussion of growth in the Houston region.

Mission

Improve the quality of life of all the people of the Houston region through research, education, and discussion.

Vision

In 2036, on its 200th birthday, the Houston region will be home to the healthiest, happiest, most prosperous people in the United States.

It’s an ambitious vision, but the Houston region is an ambitious place.

Houston Tomorrow needs your help to make this vision come true.

- We need to create safe, walkable neighborhoods.

- We need to enhance and protect our communities.

- We need clean air and water.

- We need a dependable food supply.

- We need greenspace and parks near our homes.

- We need better transportation choices.

Houston Tomorrow is investing in all of that and more, every day.

“I know of no other organization in this city that has played a more helpful and constructive role in stimulating new ideas about how to ensure Houston’s continued success.”

-Stephen Klineberg, Ph.D., Rice University Department of Sociology
