roadrunner
I am excited for this place, but I do agree about the lack of greenspace at Hermann Park. It is very big, but it has gotten so popular that it's hard to find any open space. I would love it if a great lawn was developed so that you had space to throw the frisbee around, lay out, put together a touch football game, etc.
barracuda
Burning cattle carcasses??? Man, did you ever pick the wrong city to live in if you don't like the smell of meat cooking... I hear San Francisco is lovely; why not give it a try? Well, it's annoying when you're running at Memorial, trying to be healthy and all, and all you can smell is smoke coming from the Becks Prime near the driving range. It also seems like overkill to build one at Herman Park when there are thousands of burger places in the city already. But apparently, some people need the enticement of hamburgers to draw them to visit a park. And actually, Houston is an awesome city for people who like variety and/or those who don't eat meat. wernicke
And personally, I don't really care to smell burning cattle carcasses while I'm trying to enjoy the park. I get enough of that from the Becks when I visit Memorial Park. But I guess you can't have a park in Houston without the smell of burning meat everywhere.Well, it's annoying when you're running at Memorial, trying to be healthy and all, and all you can smell is smoke coming from the Becks Prime near the driving range. Jeez... get over yourself. Herman Park is 445-acres... most dense activity is centralized near the lake/zoo area, which is where the 1600-sq ft cafe is going. There is plenty of space to do your own thing. The Hermann Park Conservancy is responding to public demand to improve the park experience. Oh wait, maybe they should put an oil drilling platform on the lake at Hermann Park as well. No point in leaving any open park space unused. houstonfella
Check this out from HBJ.The Tiffany & Co. Foundation has granted three organizations, including the Hermann Park Conservancy in Houston, $2.75 million for restoration of parks and gardens.Hermann Park will receive $1 million to build The Tiffany & Co. Foundation Bridge at Lake Plaza. The bridge will have an arched design and serve as a focal point of the park and plaza.Lake Plaza, currently under construction, is a LEED certified project. It is expected to be completed in March.Hermann Park Bridge
Jax
So where is this bridge going to be? Across the lake? That doesn't make much sense, since the lake is fairly small. The lake plaza should be nice when it's done. I'd like to see some renderings of the bridge though.

KimberlySayWhat
Nevermind. A press release was posted on the Hermann Park website today that says, "The entire Lake Plaza is a LEED certified project scheduled for completion in March 2009". I assume this includes the bridge. The entire Hermann Park project is scheduled from completion in 2014. I knew there were some things going on over there, but I didn't know about all of this. http://www.hermannpark.org/tiffanypressrelease.htm

JLWM8609
I visited the new and improving Hermann Park today when I took my 2 year old niece to ride the new train. As someone who grew up on the old trains, the new train ride just wasn't the same to me. The shiny new train looked nice, but I missed the smell of the diesel exhaust (I think it was diesel) going through the old tunnel filled with crazy dancing figures. They have a tunnel now, but it's just a warehouse with a door at each end (I kid you not). Except for a few portions, the train follows an all new path, and you can really get a good view of the changes occuring at the park. Gravel walkways, nicer landscaping, etc... Part of me misses the old park, but another part is glad to see new air being breathed into the park.

Thanks for the update, was wondering about that, took a ride on it before the changes for old times sake...that tunnel was a little cheesy, with those figures, but the ride was great, very long, gave you a good view of the park layout. Will have to check it out. Where did all those old mini trains go?

I stay away from bright orange teeth as a rule. I would love to collect $3 a head though...OR, they could take them as a barter for the train tickets, which are $2.50. The extra 50 cents they would get could go toward cold storage or butchering while they stockpile between trips to the wildlife department to collect the bounty.EDIT: And no, not my slippers. JLWM8609
Maybe those nutria rats are the new food source for gators at the Houston Zoo. I know the zoo in NOLA uses nutria rats for that very purpose. It's a good deal, a free food source for the gators located just steps away from the entrance, how much money would they save? Jax
Here are some photos of the Hermann Park construction. Maybe we can change the title of this thread to "Hermann Park Construction" or something, as there is no other Hermann Park thread that I can find except one specifically about the train, and another from 2004. Maybe this could also be moved to Going Up as well, as it's still under construction. The new parts of the park including several buildings which remind me a bit of Disco Green are supposed to open in March. Sorry about the not so great photos. I didn't have time to edit crop or rotate any of them. Edited February 16, 2009 by Jax

All of these improvements have brought out the worst sort of people, the kind that breathe and move about and park. Four or five years ago we could go on a nice Sunday afternoon and there were 1/3rd the number of humans there. The bridge was ugly and we saw a duck commit murder. My wife was upset by it, but we don't know the whole story. Jax
I actually kind of like the fact that there are people around when I go to the park. if I want to get away from people I'll go walk around downtown on a Sunday morning or go out to the country. I've only lived in H-Town since summer of 2006 and ever since I've been here the park has been popular. I've also never driven to the park (I always walk/bike) so I don't have to deal with traffic. cougarbrent
one could argue that the Herman park area of Houston could rival any public park space in the country. Its very nice and the trees are wonderful as well as all of the amenities nearby like the rail and the museums and restaurants. Not many cities have great park areas like this.
