Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday, May 18, for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2 - 4 PM.

Three vintage 1960's modern/contemporary style houses, situated west of downtown Houston are featured.  They are in need of new preservation-minded owners.

Thanks to Houston MODern Market for sponsoring this FREE event. The next MODern Market will be held in October 20-26, 2014.

The nationally recognized architecture firm of George Pierce - Abel B. Pierce designed this sophisticated modern house in the early 1960's.  Interior spaces are organized around a courtyard which provides an almost seamless indoor/outdoor flow to the main living areas yet maintains privacy from the street.    Rooms are spacious including four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms where handsome custom cabinetry is integral.  Pierce and Pierce's own houses were of similar design and located in the general area.

George F. Pierce was from Dallas, Texas, a graduate of SMU and Rice (1943), and taught architecture at Rice.   Abel B. Pierce (no relation to George) was from Blessing, Texas and a descendent of Jonathan and brother Shanghai Pierce, cattle barons and founders of Rancho Grande, once over 250,000 acres near Bay City.  Abel Pierce was a 1930 graduate of Rice Institute.  The Pierce - Pierce firm was founded in 1948.

Contrasting architectural elements similar to those found in the Barcelona Pavilion are incorporated in this handsome duplex located west of Houston's Galleria.  A dominate horizontal is established by a hovering concrete roof plane supported by thin columns in places and massive brick walls in others.  Sliding glass walls and windows extend (in fact) from the white terrazzo floor to the ceiling, while interior walls and door frames are articulated with reveals.  Each unit has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a swimming pool within a landscaped courtyard.

While historic research continues, we attribute the design to architect William S. Tamminga, partner of the Houston firm O'Neil Ford and Associates along with Ford and Richard Colley of 1953-1956.  Tamminga was a graduate of Rice Institute and later taught architecture there according to his son, also an architect. The Youtz-Slick Lift-Slab construction method, seldom seen in residential construction, was used on this duplex. After the foundation was poured, a second steel reinforced slab was poured and hydraulically elevated on columns to become the roof plane. The original buildings of Trinity University in San Antonio were built using this method.  Tamminga went on to design and oversee the construction of the Texas Instruments facility in Houston as well as a lift-slab house for Errol Flynn in Jamaica and Frenchman's Cove resort in the Caribbean, which also featured a lift-slab design.
