Tumbleweed_Tx
during the last boom cycle, we had 80 million sqft of space built, with no old building rehabs. during this boom, we had 17 million sqft built... How many sqft of old buildings have been rehabbed, and repurposed this cycle?

Nate99
If they are already putting drywall in, they are moving fast. I would think that the plumbing and electrical work would take a long time to go from empty shell to however many working hotel rooms we’re talking about here, but maybe there is less to it than I am imagining. BigFootsSocks
That's barely enough drywall for half a floor. They're probably just working floor by floor.
Nate99
That's barely enough drywall for half a floor. They're probably just working floor by floor. It will take a bunch of it, I'm sure. I was just surprised they were ready to put any in at all. Maybe they're going for a "lofty" theme and leaving the pipes exposed.
BigFootsSocks
Not a bad idea; Aloft hotels are usually pretty "modern" and chic

"A new roof patio is proposed with a pool, bar and fire pit. A shallow concrete pool (max depth 4 feet) and overall dimensions of 30ˈ x 18ˈ is proposed for the center of the roof. Installation of the pool will require cutting a hole in the roof structure." There are some cool historic photos of the building in this doc. Also there is a floor plan of the roof deck and pictures of the view - it looks sweet with views of the JW, 609 Main, 1111 Rusk and Niels Esperson. Nice job by Hines and Pickard / Kendall / Heaton in leaving this building in place when constructing BG Group Place.

cspwal
A few weeks ago Starwood updated the site for Aloft Hotel at 820 Fannin St in downtown Houston. The site shows an opening date of June 21, 2016 and renderings: I don't understand where this sign would be - I mean there's no set back from the street at all for this building

adr
I was in Tulsa last week, and I used to occasion to book a room in the Aloft hotel they have there. It was similarly a repurposing of an old building, in that case some sort of modernist office building in the midst of their civil government complex (surrounded by a convention center, courthouse, govt offices, etc). It was fantastic from a customer experience perspective. It really made me even more excited that this is the brand taking over this building - this hotel is going to be a hit and a really cool addition to the neighborhood.

bobruss
Really nice project. Anytime an old building gets repurposed in Houston is a good project. I also like seeing those wonderful gardens on top of BG garage. Would someone take some shots of the gardens and post them. Thanks

Urbannizer
Bill is 82% finished with the renovation of the Stowers building (seen below), but recently got a call from Parks Services saying the project was in danger of losing its tax credits because they didn't like the pipes and sprinklers the city made them put in for fire code. The hotel lost some rooms trying to work around the problem and remain historic. H-Town Man
While Bill is a pioneer in historic preservation in Houston, some might be surprised to find out he's also building a shiny new convention center hotel (breaking ground after the Super Bowl) Say wha???

WOW? You can swim laps without even using strokes, but you had better be good at turns. If I worked in BG Place, I'd get a room on my day off just to sit out there taunting my co-workers.
