JoninATX
I might have said this before, but are there actual renderings for the new 24 st office tower there building? I keep seeing a 10 story version of it.
cloud713
id imagine it would only be conceptual as whatever flag hotel ends up perched on top would surely have a say in the design?
JoninATX
Thanks Cloud713. It is kinda strange that an accurate rendering hasn't been published yet.
monarch
^^^ actually, we still have not learned the name of the prospective hotel brand, that shall occupy the top hotel portion of this new tower. i wonder why?
BigFootsSocks
Probably because they haven't signed one yet?
cloud713
That's kind of my thinking. I wonder if negotiations with the initial flag fell through or if things are just taking longer than expected. Before the summer they were saying they hoped to make an announcement in a few months.
Moore713
I.think the original design for the alexdessra.. would fit great here
Triton
There's actually a massive gap between the Houston First office and the parking garage itself. I wonder if they have any temporary solution if this hotel doesn't go forward anytime soon.
bobruss
I don't think they have a hotel lined up yet. If I remember correctly when they first announced this project it was hoped that they would work out a deal with a hotel to go on top of Houston First but it wasn't a done deal. Houston First is big on publicity and they haven't said anything about the hotel lately.
monarch
^^^ it was stated a couple of months ago, that the GHP / HOUSTON FIRST were undergoing negotiations with a well known hotel brand, and that the name was supposed to be announced on or around the middle to the end of august. my thoughts at that time were that this particular hotel brand could very possibly become houston's next DOWNTOWN OMNI HOTEL. however, now, i really do not know.... JoninATX
Thanks everyone, I'm sure a hotel announcement will be made here soon. Also it looks like the new steel part being erected on top of the Convention Center will be cased in glass from what the rendering tells us. Avossos
They also appear to be lighten up at night. the Convention Center really isnt bad at all... its a nice tribute to the 80s architecture. The only better Convention Center i know of is the one in NYC near midtown... and that is recently built!
phillip_white
Not sure if the first two renderings have been posted before, but it's the first time I've seen them. phillip_white
And with the birth of the monorail, HAIF will come out with pitchforks demanding Monorail Level Retail and wondering who could have possibly been in favor of GFR. por favor gracias
And with the birth of the monorail, HAIF will come out with pitchforks demanding Monorail Level Retail and wondering who could have possibly been in favor of GFR. Haha...I may get on that bandwagon myself! In all seriousness, I think that most of our larger buildings downtown could accommodate stations/access to and from the 2nd floor of their lobbies. I'd love for Houston to have an elevated 45-65 MPH rail system connecting downtown to the suburbs and airports, and a subway network connecting downtown at least with the med center and galleria areas and with easy access to our tunnel system downtown. Perhaps I need new glasses. I do not see a monorail in the renderings. It was mentioned in the article linked above: http://www.archpaper.com/news/articles.asp?id=7645#.VechoIuwbhD

cspwal
It's going to be interesting to see what the final configuration of this area is going to be. If you look at historical Google Earth views, it's changed a lot even since building MMP

BigFootsSocks
I know it doesn't really mean much, but they are pouring a roof/floor for the 8th floor, and the piers have an extension for further floors. This initial office is only 7 floors.Take that as you will.
Urbannizer
They were wanting to keep the crane on site and use it for the hotel once the office building is complete.
BigFootsSocks
Yeah that's what I'm saying; the office is listed at 7 floors, the pic shows the roof of the 7th floor with piers extending above where the roof is, which I assume means they're pouring a floor for an 8th floor.
Houston19514
Houston First's COO gave a report on this project to the hotel committee at a meeting last week. bach
I think the monorail idea was part of the original Houston Center development plan, and was abandoned decades ago. The people mover was part of Texas Eastern's Houston Center vision -- a city within a city. People would drive directly from freeways to parking garages and use the people mover (above ground) to get to their office and other buildings. Part of the plan: turn your back to the street -- who wanted to be there? So 1, 2, 3, 4 Houston Center have little street presence. The people mover was planned, in part, to help people move around the 74-acre site without having to go to street level. Then Panhandle purchased Texas Eastern, and the future plans went away. Edited September 15, 2015 by bach
cloud713
Yep.. Like Bach mentioned, a big reason why the Houston Center complex lacks street presence. They thought everyone would get around through 2nd floor gerbil tubes and people movers.Fortunately Crescent/HC has acknowledged that problem and have been working with at least one architecture firm to draw up plans for redevelopment of the lower floors.
