286liger
Sourced directly from Marriott Development Corp out of the Dallas office. JW Galleria which opened in the mid to late 1980's and is owned by the Marriott Corp subsidiary REIT, is slated to be sold and rebranded as a "Non Marriott" branded hotel within the near "immediate" future. With the soft opening of the new JW Marriott Downtown scheduled for September 18th 2014, and the full ramp up to take place within the final quarter of 2014. It would not be financially feasible for the current JW Houston (Galleria) to design and complete a renovation, to a standard that wouldn’t diminish and hurt the JW Brand. Apparently having 2 JW Marriott brands in one city within such close proximity was never the intent of Marriott or Pearl Hospitality.
Avossos
What? The are miles apart and, in my opinion, able to coexist, Dumb move if true
Naviguessor
^Marriott is no "dumb " company. Let's assume they know what they are doing. I'm guessing Sheraton replaces. But...what difference does it make. There's almost always is a cycle with properties.
IronTiger
Wasn't the Sheraton at 290 and 610 a Marriott before this one opened?
kylejack
What? The are miles apart and, in my opinion, able to coexist,Dumb move if true JW Marriott is the luxury property. Someone looking for the best Marriott experience shouldn't have to guess which one is the better property. This simplifies it.

For the record, the JW Marriott Houston ( Galleria) is owned by Host Hotels & Resorts, which is not a subsidiary of Marriott Corp. It is a completely separate company that owns hotels flying many flags other than Marriott's. It started its life when Marriott split itself into two separate companies; one to own hotel properties and the other to operate and manage Marriott-branded hotels. Host started its life owning just the Marriott hotels it started with but quickly diversified and its properties now fly flags of many of the high-end full service hotels. One wonders what the downtown soft opening and full ramp-up has to do with the JW Galleria's ability or inability to design and complete a renovation imagined to be needed to not diminish the JW Brand. Any such renovation would be paid for by Host Hotels, not by Marriott International or Pearl Hospitality. IF this is true (and note that in spite of the misleading title of the thread, even the OP does not contend that the hotel is going to close), it seems it's most likely a move on the part of Host Hotels, not Marriott. I'm sure Marriott International is more than happy to have 2 JW Marriotts in town, but Host Hotels might want an exclusive flag for its property. nativehoustonion
Could it be because the Marriott Marquis will start construction in April?
Houston19514
Could it be because the Marriott Marquis will start construction in April? Hard to see how that would be related either. The Marriott Marquis is being built by yet another company, unrelated to either of the JW Marriotts.
Naviguessor
Peabody is a good guess. And the traditional/conservative nature of the property seems to lend itself well to the Peabody brand.

JW Marriott
We are not sure from where this information is stemming, but we can say with full certainty that there are no plans to close or rebrand the JW Marriott Houston Galleria. Marriott has proudly managed this property in the wonderful city of Houston for more than 25 years and looks forward to doing so the foreseeable future. Respectfully, the JW Marriott team.
Highrise Tower
Multimillion-dollar renovations underway at hotel near Houston's Galleria mall https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2019/06/12/multimillion-dollar-renovations-underway-at-hotel.html Quote The JW Marriott Houston by The Galleria has begun work on a $3.9 million renovation to its first-floor lobby and restaurant, according to permits filed with the city of Houston. The hotel, which is operated by Maryland-based Marriott International (Nasdaq: MAR), has hired the Houston branch of Structure Tone Southwest, a subsidiary of New York-based Structure Tone LLC, to serve as general contractor for the renovation. Structure Tone did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The JW Marriott is located at 5150 Westheimer Road, across the street from The Galleria mall. JW Marriott owned the property at 5150 Westheimer from at least 1988 until 1994, when the property sold to HMC Retirement Properties, according to Harris County Appraisal District records. The property is currently valued at $49.4 million, HCAD records show. JW Marriott acknowledged the ongoing renovation work on the hotel’s website, saying that construction began May 31 and will continue through Sept. 24. The website said the work will be limited to business hours and "every effort will be made to minimize noise and disturbance.” With 482 rooms, the JW Marriott Houston by The Galleria was No. 8 on the Houston Business Journal’s 2018 Largest Houston-Area Hotels List. But the Galleria JW Marriott did not make HBJ’s 2019 List, which is ranked by revenue per available room (RevPAR). @Urbannizer Change the thread title?
