kbates2
I couldn't find anything on this and just read about it this morning. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Fire-museum-plans-doused-by-lack-of-funding-4927493.php?cmpid=btfpm#/0 That article on the Fire Museum's plans says that they are selling the land to Alexan. "Money for those improvements should come from a pending sale of the museum's planned building site, a 1.44-acre tract at Main and Hadley for apartment development. M. Scot Davis of Trammell Crow Residential said the high-end project, Alexan Midtown, will have five stories of apartments atop two levels of parking. Davis said the average 850-square-foot unit will lease for about $1,700 a month. Sale of property is to close on Monday, Davis said. Construction of the 215-unit complex should begin in January, with the first units ready for occupancy in early 2015."
Texasota
Awesome. I'm sorry, but keeping the fire museum in the current 19th century firehouse makes *way* more sense than building some brand new building.
nate
Sad for the fire museum, but nice to see a vacant lot on Main get developed. Unable to raise the needed funds, the Fire Museum of Houston on Friday said plans for a $15 million state-of-the-art midtown museum have gone up in smoke. Rising from the ashes, though, are proposals to buy the museum's present 1898 firehouse home from the city and upgrade its exhibits and educational activities. infinite_jim
Anything's better than that black wrought-iron fence and private greenfield. Also more apts in Midtown means more pressure to lower rents in light of the recent spike, esp considering this is next to a gold buyer and a street "pain clinic." Purdueenginerd
I like the vertical sign along main street. The inside, Nice but I feel it will be dated and tacky in less than a decade. -strictly opinion of course..
Texasota
It's a weird mix of art deco and midcentury mod. It starts out dated and tacky. Which is why I love it.
Howard Huge
Overall I love everything about this project.Am I the only one who wishes this was taller though? You know, since its close to the downtown/midtown border where the downtown skyline slopes downward into 2016 Main, Central Bank, and 2000 Crawford, I wish midtown would get taller there because thats where the skylines will merge. It would be nice if we could eventually get a 40 story resi high rise like in this area like we are getting in other parts of town... LTAWACS
This is what I've been saying all along. That midtown needs taller buildings. Some of those "energy centre v" type buildings would be good here.
Texasota
Midtown needs fewer vacant lots. That is way more important than some notion of a quasi-continuous skyline which, for most people most of the time, would be impossible to perceive.
HoustonIsHome
I agree. A dense midrise sea around downtown would be more feasible for the area for now than a string of towers surrounded by lots.

Avossos
you know - this is one of the cooler art deco designs we are seeing... other midtown/ inner loop apartment buildings (in my mind) are falling into the cheap - modern inspired - construction category. This one however meets the eye test. Hope the brick work and art deco features do not disappoint!
htownproud
Glad to see them pushing dirt. As I was going by it today, I noted that the folks with a north view will have a good view of downtown, but will also be staring at the giant Shell station across the street. Completely agree. It will be interesting to see any projects that pop up next to Greyhound. ...Many people on this forum that don't live near the city would be shocked by the amount of growth occurring on the very western edge of Third Ward. There is townhome after townhome being built. I'll be sure to take pictures of it when I drive through there next time.

I remember we saw a young whitel girl running at night right before he retired and he said a few years before that you never would have seen that and thought she was crazy.95% of the people that now live there probably have no clue what these areas around downtown used to be like as far as crime and drugs.
